Gremlins Derail Austin Liggett at Merced Speedway
PETERSEN MEDIA: Getting right back to work on Saturday night with the USAC Western States Midgets in Merced, CA, Austin Liggett had a very strong car but unfortunately mechanical issues forced to bow out of the lead battle.
“We had an awesome car, definitely good enough to pick up a win,” Liggett said. “We were in a really good battle with Jake Swanson for the lead but we had some issues with 10-to go, and I pulled off.”
With 18 cars checked in to go to work at the racy Central California bullring, Liggett timed the Excel Environmental Services/Liggett Trucking/Tool Technology machine in fourth quickest in qualifying time trials.
Taking the green flag from the fifth starting position in heat race action, Liggett would make up a little ground, as he would finish third and keep himself in the feature event inversion.
Lining up 4thin the feature event, Liggett would move into third as he chased after Maria Cofer and Jake Swanson who battled hard in front of him. Taking command of the second spot, Liggett then waged war with Swanson as they battled for the top spot.
Seemingly getting strong as the laps clicked off, Liggett’s bid for his seventh win of the season would come to a end on the 20thlap as something would go amiss under the hood of his car forcing him back to the pit area.
“My dad really had us dialed in and it felt good,” Liggett added. “Aside from my dad I also have to thank my Mom, Landon, Britton, and Matt for all of their help as well in the pits all night long.”
