PETERSEN MEDIA- Getting off to a slow start on Saturday night, Tony Gualda and the C&M Motorsports team never gave up and did a great job of digging out of an early hole as Gualda fought his way forward to finish sixth with the Sprint Car Challenge Tour in Hanford, CA on Saturday night.
“We hurt an engine last week, so we had a different one in on Saturday night and sort of fought it early,” Gualda said. “Cody, MF, and everyone who helps on this thing worked hard, and we got things going pretty well by the feature.”
Timing in fifth quickest in his time trials group, the Hollister, CA driver had some work to do in his heat race aboard the Moorefield Construction, Inc./Hollister Auto Parts/Dassel’s Petroleum backed No. 7C.
Going from fifth to third in his heat race, those positions would be pivotal for Gualda as it improved his feature event starting position by a few rows as he took the green from the sixth row on this night.
In the first few laps, Gualda proved to be on a mission, as he wasted no time jumping into the Top-10 and actually was up into sixth with just nine laps completed in the feature event.
As the race moved along, Gualda would actually make a daring move to jump up into fourth, but as luck would have it an untimely yellow would fly and it would negate his pass.
Continuing to battle for a position in the Top-10 as he looked for a way into the Top-Five, Gualda would battle hard with Sean Becker and Bud Kaeding.
Just unable to clear Kaeding, Gualda capped his night with a sixth place finish.
“It has been a tough couple of weeks for our team, so to bounce back like we did after a slow start was really a nice boost of confidence,” Gualda added. “Looking forward to a busy couple of weeks we have coming up.”
