PETERSEN MEDIA- Spending his Saturday night in Watsonville, CA competing at the Ocean Speedway in the Johnny Key Classic Presented By Al’s Roofing Supply, Kyle Hirst worked from his 11th starting spot to finish seventh in the 50-lap feature event that ultimately went rubber down.
“I have to thank my guys for all of their hard work at what was a really tough race,” Hirst said. “We were fortunate with the pill draw and raced our way into the 50-lap feature, and put a good run together in the feature, even with the rubber down.”
With 48 cars on hand, 43 of which were racing for a spot in the feature, Hirst went out in the third group for time trials, and timed his Roth Enterprises/HR Livestock Transportation/3H Cattle entry sixth fastest, putting him on the front row of his qualifier.
Starting on the front row alongside DJ Netto, Hirst settled into the second spot, as he searched around the slicked off speedway chasing after the leader. With the top-four transferring, Hirst was mindful of the format, and took his second place finish into the feature event, where he gridded the field in the sixth row.
The early goings of the race provided some very entertaining action, as cars were battling all over the track, and Hirst fought for position as he battled between 10th and 13th.
In a long green flag run leading up to the scheduled caution, Hirst sat in the 13th spot with 25 laps to go, but had 10 minutes to work with his crew, and get his machine dialed in.
With a hint of rubber in the air, and reading tires, the team made the necessary adjustments to adapt to the changing track conditions, and as the rubber began being laid down when the race went back green, Hirst was able to still move forward.
Working the bottom of the speedway, Hirst sat in the seventh spot when the caution waived on the 47th lap. Moving into the sixth spot under the caution, Hirst battled with Jonathan Allard the last stretch, and took the checkered with a seventh place finish.
“I wish we could have been in a little better position after the first 25-laps,” he said. “Being that far back and then having the track take rubber, it really makes things difficult, but I have to hand it to the Roth Motorsports guys for rolling their sleeves up during the pit stop.”
Kyle and his Roth Motorsports team would like to thank Roth Enterprises, HR Livestock Transportation, 3H Cattle, Mobil1, FK Rod Ends, Weld Wheels, Brown and Miller Racing Solutions, Kent Performance, Kaeding Performance, and Astro Titanium for their support in 2013.
