PETERSEN MEDIA: Joel Myers Jr had a memorable trip to Watsonville, CA over the weekend. Following a ninth place run on Friday night, Joel Myers Jr mirrored his career best KWS/NARC finish as he ran third at the 12th Annual Howard Kaeding Classic.
“It was a really good weekend for our team, and it felt great to get back after it following a weekend off,” Joel Myers Jr said. “My guys worked hard, and we had a blast.”
Friday night kicked the HK Classic weekend off with the Taco Bravo 360’s taking center stage. Myers Jr went out in the middle of the qualifying session and timed the All About Fire Protection/Hi-Plains Building Division/Dirt Dudes Excavating backed No. 46jr in ninth fastest.
Lining up on the front row of his heat race, Myers Jr went toe to toe with some of the region’s best in his heat as he battled hard before coming away with a third-place finish. Though not able to earn a berth into the Dash, the Sebastopol, CA driver was locked into the feature event as he took the green flag from the 12th starting position.
On the slick Ocean Speedway surface, Myers Jr used the bottom as he clawed his way forward. Racing his way into fifth, Myer Jr’s powerplant would start to overheat. Backing down as the temp continued to rise, Myers Jr slipped back to ninth when the 30-lap affair came to an end.
Swapping power plants to the 410ci engine on Saturday morning, Saturday night saw Myers Jr get off to a great start as he timed in third quickest amongst the 38 cars checked into the pit area.
Gridding the field from the second row of his heat race, Myers Jr would hold his position as his finish mixed with his qualifying points put him solidly in the Sunnyvalley Bacon Powered Dash.
Though he took the green flag of the Dash from the pole, Myers Jr slipped back to finish fourth. Though unable to capitalize on the prime starting position in the Dash, Myers Jr still had a great position to open up the 30-lap feature event.
As the race came to life, Myers Jr wasted no time jumping into second as he chased after race leader, Justin Sanders.
Running in second, the leaders would quickly reach the back of the field as they began the lapping process. Racing through traffic, Myers Jr would take a couple shots at Sanders for the lead, but each move worked to no avail.
Continuing to run second, Blake Carrick would sneak under Myers Jr late in the race as he worked the bottom to perfection.
With Carrick glued to the bottom, ‘Jr’ could not get back around, as he capped the feature off with a third place finish and mirrored his career best finish with the traveling series.
“We were really good on Saturday night, and had a car that was good enough win, but we just couldn’t take full advantage of the opportunities we had,” Myers Jr said. “I am really happy with how the 46JR feels and am excited to give it another go this weekend.”
