PETERSEN MEDIA- Getting to the Knoxville Raceway for the first time in 2016 on Saturday night as Mother Nature finally stepped aside, Ian Madsen and his KCP Racing team would find themselves in an early hole following time trials, but were able to get out of the opener with a 12th place finish.

“We went out early in time trials, and the track kept getting better and better and we ended up getting buried,” Madsen said. “Luckily we raced okay and were able to make the most of it.”

With 31 cars on hand for the Knoxville Raceway’s season opening event, Madsen would time the Logan Contractors Supply Inc./Aspen Aire/Team Kline Electric No. 18 machine in 13th quickest.

The time would put him on the front row of his heat race, but he would not be as fortunate in the main event. Able to pick up the heat race win and safely move into the feature event, Madsen would grid the field from the sixth row for the 25 lap feature event.

The first start would be waived off as it was deemed Madsen was too early on the throttle, so when the race finally got underway Madsen took the green from the 14th position.

On a track that got extremely slick and ultimately began taking rubber, Madsen would battle with the likes of Johnny Herrera, Austin McCarl, and Matt Juhl as they all jockeyed for position and fought for the final spot in the Top-10.

Unable to crack the Top-10, Madsen would end his 2016 Knoxville Raceway opener with a 12th place finish.

“The field here is so tough that now you really can’t afford to come from deep in the field like we did,” Madsen added. “Saturday we just got a little unlucky with the qualifying draw, but I think the rest of the night went okay.”

Ian and his KCP Racing team would like to thank Logan Contractors Supply Inc., Aspen Aire, Team Kline Electric, Royal Flooring, Bobcat, TammyHeckart.com, Caliber Iowa, Quality Traffic Control, Flatrate, Inc., Speck USA, Bergen Paulsen, Coverage Direct, Finer Cuts lawn and Landscape, Lucas Oil, and Revolution Race Gear for their support this season.

2016 BY THE NUMBERS: Starts-7, Wins-0, Top-5’s- 3, Top 10’s-4
