JA 5th at Peter Murphy Classic
PETERSEN MEDIA- Looking to defend his Peter Murphy Classic win from a year ago, Jonathan Allard overcame a mid race brush with the wall to close his weekend out with a fifth place finish on Saturday night with the King of the West Series in Tulare, CA after running second at the Keller Auto Speedway in Hanford, CA on Friday night.
“Overall, we had a great car every time we hit the track on Saturday night, and that is a huge credit to my guys, and how hard they have worked,” Allard said. “I had the car to win on Friday night but I messed up.”
Friday night at the Keller Auto Speedway, 27 cars would check into the pit area and tricky track conditions would see Allard time the Tri-C Manufacturing/K&N/ButlerBuilt No. 3c machine in second fastest.
Getting a nice start in his heat race, Allard would work into the second spot and challenge for the lead late in the race. On an extremely slick surface, Allard would not force the issue as he settled for second and moved into the Dash.
Following a third place finish in the Dash, Allard would use a lap three restart to move into the second spot as he began to go to work on Jason Meyers. With the entire field running the bottom in turns one and two, Allard would be one of the few to use the top in turns three and four.
Staying committed to the top, Allard would seize an opportunity on 13th lap as he drove around Meyers exiting turn four to take the lead in traffic, as the caution flew a lap later giving the leader clear track.
In open track, Allard would briefly pull away from the field, until he got into traffic and saw his lead evaporate. The closing laps saw Ryan Bernal work the bottom in three and four and overtake the top spot from Allard with just seven laps to go before the race’s final caution flew.
Though Allard would pressure Bernal over the final four laps, he would be unable to do anything with him as he crossed the finish line with a second place finish.
Heading south to the Thunderbowl Raceway on Saturday night for the Second Annual Peter Murphy Classic, Allard would time in seventh fastest of the 36 cars checked into the event.
A second place finish in his heat race would not put the 2014 Peter Murphy Classic Champion in the Pole Shuffle, and he would line up in the 10th spot for the 30-lap feature event.
Getting as high as the fifth spot during green flag action, Allard would get into the turn four wall as the race reached the halfway point and lose valuable track position as he fell back to the 10th spot.
Keeping his composure, Allard would pass many of the cars he passed during the first half of the race as he rallied to take the checkered flag in the fifth spot.
“Saturday night was a race I really wanted to win, but it just did not go our way and we ran fifth,” Allard added. “We had an awesome crowd that stuck it out with us during a very long night of racing and I hope they all had fun. It was a great event put on by a great guy, and I am just thankful that Clyde and Marion Lamar support this team and let us compete in events like these.”
