PETERSEN MEDIA- Having a nice start to the 2016 USAC West Coast 360’s season, Jace Vander Weerd picked up a second place finish on Saturday night at the Bakersfield Speedway.

“It was a really good night for us, I just wished we would have gotten into traffic sooner,” Vander Weerd said. “The track ended up taking rubber, and the leader and I were running the same speed but traffic never came into play and we ended up second.”

Setting the standard in qualifying time trials aboard his Vander Weerd Construction/Stonegate Development/Battery Worx No. 88 machine, Vander Weerd raced his way to a second place finish in his heat race.

Gridding the field from the fourth position for the feature event, Vander Weerd quickly worked into the third spot when the race got underway. Motoring into the second spot on lap five, Vander Weerd then set his sights on race leader, Troy Rutherford.

On the extremely slick racing surface, Vander Weerd would find the early traces of rubber going down on the speedway before the leader and would close in on him quickly.

Though unable to get to the stop spot before the leader too found the rubber, Vander Weerd chased after him waiting to any mistake or opening to take command of the race.

Finding the opening he needed, Vander Weerd would race into the lead out of turns three and four, but the Rutherford would counter in turns one and two, and as the duo drag raced down the backstretch, Vadner Weerd would continue to run in the second spot.

With timely cautions keeping lapped traffic out of play, Vander Weerd would go on to finish in the second position, as he now sits third in series points.

“I have to thank my family and crew for all of their help and support,” Vander Weerd added. “It was a really fun night of racing, and hopefully we can keep running well.”

Jace and his Vander Weerd Racing team would like to thank Vander Weerd Construction, Stonegate Development, Battery Worx, Mid-Valley Pipe, Basic Industries, Factory Kahne Shocks, Steve Watt Enterprises, FK Rod Ends, PXP Racewear and K&N for their support in 2016.

2016 BY THE NUMBERS: Starts-4, Wins-0, Top 5’s-1, Top 10’s-2.

ON TAP: Jace will take this weekend off before returning to action on April 2nd at the Keller Auto Speedway in Hanford, CA.
