PETERSEN MEDIA- Jace Vander Weerd has become a favorite at the Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, CA over the last few seasons. Saturday night, Vander Weerd was in the battle up front again as he would pick up a fourth place finish during the USAC West Coast 360’s portion of the popular Peter Murphy Classic.
“The track took rubber quicker than we thought it would, but it was still a great night,” Jace Vander Weerd said.
With 21 cars on hand for one of the crown jewels on the 2017 series schedule, the Visalia, CA driver would time the Vander Weerd Construction/Stonegate Development/Mid-Valley Pipe backed No. 88v machine in fifth fastest in time trials.
Lining up in the second row of his heat race, Vander Weerd would hold the spot as he would finish third and move into the feature event. With the inversion pill being pulled follow the heat, Vander Weerd would find himself in the fourth row for the scheduled 30-lap feature event.
As the night moved on the track would continue to slick off, and would be slick and abrasive when the feature event got underway. From the fourth row, Vander Weerd would get off to an extremely strong start on the bottom of the speedway, as he was inside the Top-Five in the first five laps of the race.
Making a bid for the third spot, Vander Weerd would get by Danny Faria, only to see Faria get him back just as the track would start to take rubber. As the rubber went down on the speedway, passing would cease up and cars would run single file.
The race’s closing laps would me mired with stoppages, and with several restarts to try and make a bid for the podium, Vander Weerd would take the checkered flag with a fourth place finish.
“I think we had something for the podium if the rubber doesn’t come in so fast,” Vander Weerd said. “Again, it was a great night for our team, and thanks to everyone who gave me a good car.”
Jace and his Vander Weerd Racing team would like to thank Vander Weerd Construction, Stonegate Development, Mid-Valley Pipe, Basic Industries, Factory Kahne Shocks, Steve Watt Enterprises, FK Rod Ends, PXP Racewear and K&N for their support in 2017.
