Jace Vander Weerd Second with USAC West Coast 360’s

PETERSEN MEDIA- Spending his Saturday night battling with the USAC West Coast 360’s at the Keller Auto Speedway in Hanford, CA, Jace Vander Weerd would find himself in a dog fight for the win with brother, Richard, during the final five laps before picking up his second consecutive second place finish.
“It was a great nice for our race team, but it does suck to a lose a race like that,” Jace Vander Weerd said. “The only silver lining to losing a race like that is at least it was to my brother.”
Timing his Vander Weerd Construction/Stonegate Development/Battery Worx No. 88 machine in ninth fastest, Vander Weerd would overcome a minor issue in his heat race to pick up a third place finish.
With his heat race finish, the Visalia, CA driver would find himself on the pole for the 30-lap feature event on a fast and smooth, but tricky in some spots. Following an opening lap red with some cars tangling behind him, Vander Weerd would jump out into the lead once the action got underway.
Fending off some early advances from the likes of Tristan Guardino, and Trey Marcham, Vander Weerd would continue to lead the way. As the laps clicked off, Vander Weerd would then feel pressure from Austin Liggett, but the Visalia, CA driver was having none of it, and fended him off.
A caution with five laps to go would bunch the field back up and would put Vander Weerd’s brother, Richard, on his rear bumper for what would turn into a thrilling five laps shootout.
The duo would race side by side exchanging the top spot officially three times during the final five laps, as they exchanged lines on the speedway lap after lap. Allowing Richard to open his lead up with two-to-go, Vander Weerd would close the gap on the final lap to make it interesting coming to the checkered, but it was not quite enough as he settled for second.
“I got a little tight on the restart, and it let him get by,” Vander Weerd said. “I was able to get him back and we had a really good battle there for five laps. You hate to lose one after leading most of it, but like I said at least it stayed in the family.”
Jace and his Vander Weerd Racing team would like to thank Vander Weerd Construction, Stonegate Development, Battery Worx, Mid-Valley Pipe, Basic Industries, Factory Kahne Shocks, Steve Watt Enterprises, FK Rod Ends, PXP Racewear and K&N for their support in 2016.
2016 BY THE NUMBERS: Starts-5, Wins-0, Top 5’s-2, Top 10’s-3.
ON TAP: Jace will again be in action with the USAC West Coast 360’s this Saturday night at the Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, CA.
