PETERSEN MEDIA- Friday night in Tulare, CA Jace Vander Weerd would battle with the USAC West Coast 360 Series to open his 2018 season. When the dust settled on the feature event, Vander Weerd would come away with a fifth place finish.

“It felt really good to get back in the car, and get back to racing,” Jace Vander Weerd said.

Kicking his 2018 campaign off in time trials, Vander Weerd would lay down a couple of nice laps around the high-banked 1/3 mile oval as he timed the Vander Weerd Construction/Stonegate Development/Mid-Valley Pipe backed No. 88v machine in sixth quickest in time trials.

Taking the green flag from the second starting position in his heat race, Vander Weerd would jump on the throttle when the green lights flashed on and would proceed to pick up the important win.

Moving into the night’s finale, Vander Weerd would roll off the starting grid from the fifth position on a surface that still had some good moisture in it. Slipping back to sixth in the early goings of the race, Vander Weerd was able to keep pace with the Top-Five however passing would prove to be tough at times on this night.

Continuing to stalk his prey in front of him, Vander Weerd would pounce on fifth as a car got out of shape in front of him. Able to sneak by, Vander Weerd would endure same damage to his rear suspension that would make his car a handful in the closing laps.

Able to manage the issue, Vander Weerd would chase his brother Richard across the finish line and end his night in fifth.

“We had good speed, and we kept pace with the front runners it was just hard to pass,” Jace Vander Weerd added. “It was a great way to open the season and I am looking forward to Hanford.”

Jace and his Vander Weerd Racing team would like to thank Vander Weerd Construction, Stonegate Development, Mid-Valley Pipe, Basic Industries, Factory Kahne Shocks, Steve Watt Enterprises, FK Rod Ends, PXP Racewear and K&N for their support in 2018.

2017 BY THE NUMBERS: Starts-1, Wins-0, Top 5’s-1, Top 10’s-1.
