PETERSEN MEDIA- Making the trip to the Ventura Raceway on Saturday night to battle with the USAC/CRA Series, Jace Vander Weerd would work his way forward from his 17th starting position to tally a 12th place finish.
“It was a pretty good night I thought,” Jace Vander Weerd said. “We would have liked to finish a little further forward, but the track got really tough to pass on in the feature event.”
Timing the Vander Weerd Construction/Stonegate Development/Battery Worx No. 88v machine in 18th fastest in qualifying time trials, Vander Weerd would out duel his brother, Richard, in heat race action as he picked up the win and moved into the 30-lap feature event.
Finding himself in the ninth row for the feature, Vander Weerd would slowly work his way forward as he worked from the back of the star studded field. Using the bottom of the speedway in the opening laps, Vander Weerd would flirt with the Top-10 as he rode in the 12th spot.
As the bottom groove went away, all drivers were now on the high side of the speedway, making passing very difficult. Trying to make something happen, Vander Weerd couldn’t get any grip on the speedway to make a pass attempt and would end up riding out the duration of the race in the 12th spot.
“We got off to a tough start with our qualifying time, but we raced well I thought,” Vander Weerd said. “We got going pretty good when the track was wide, but once the second groove went away, we were just stuck.”
