PETERSEN MEDIA- Winning his first career Dirt Cup just one year ago, Jason Solwold looked to repeat this last weekend, but would come up just short of his goal as he finished in the fourth spot.
“Friday night the track was pretty tricky from some rain earlier in the week, and Saturday night we were in a good position to start the race, but unfortunately we blistered a tire and slipped back to fourth.”
With Mother Nature winning the Thursday night prelim, Solwold and his Shaylen Raye Motorsports team would check into the Skagit Speedway on Friday night for the Dirt Cup opener.
Drawing a front row starting spot for his heat race, Solwold took care of business and picked up the win in the Scottie’s Plumbing/Pop’s Entertainment /Vic’s 66 No. 18 machine.
Moving into the Top-8 redraw, the Burlington, WA driver would pull the three pill and line up in the second row for what would be a wild 25-lap feature event. A series of red flags plagued the start of the race with just one lap complete, and once things finally came to life, Solwold and Marc Duperon went toe-to-toe.
A track with some rough spots made things interesting as the duo fought for the top spot. Getting by Duperon at one point during the feature, Solwold would briefly lead before the favor was returned. Doing what he could on the lightening fast surface, Solwold would settle for second at the finish line.
Locking into the Dirt Cup feature by way of his finish, Solwold would find himself on the pole for the 40-lap feature event. With track work being done right before the feature event, Solwold would take a liking to the cushion on both ends of the speedway.
Falling into the second spot when the action came to life, Solwold would try to keep pace with Sam Hafertepe, Jr who had a strong pace out front. As the race drew on, Solwold would battle with Aaron Reutzel around the race’s halfway point as he would soon slip back to third.
With his tires burnt up and blistered, Solwold would fall off the podium late in the feature event as he finished in the fourth spot.
“It was definitely not what we wanted starting on the pole, but we gave it everything we had,” Solwold said. “We had a really good car, but trying to keep pace we ended up blistering our tires pretty bad and fell back.”
Solwold and the Shaylen Raye Motorsports team would like to thank Scottie’s Plumbing, Pops Entertainment, Vic’s 66, Doyle Guffie’s Rayle Auto Sales, North West Team Excavating, Speedmart, After Hours Painting, Triple X Race Co., Al Parker Race Engines, Wings Unlimited, Slade Shocks, Rob Graham Trucking, Wings Unlimited, Meyer Sings, Vahlco Wheels, KarMart Motorsports, and Pro Signs for their continued support.
ON TAP: Solwold and the Shaylen Raye Motorsports team will return to action this Friday and Saturday night with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour at the Gray’s Harbor Raceway in Elma, WA.
