PETERSEN MEDIA: Over this past weekend, Joel Myers Jr officially brought the curtain down on the 2023 calendar year and his 2023 racing season as he made a last lap, last corner past to pick up his 10th overall win of the year.
“It was a good weekend for our team in Cromwell, NZ, and it felt great to get a War of the Wings win in exciting fashion,” Joel Myer Jr said. “Friday night we were really good late in the feature, we just ran out of laps, and on Saturday night we were able to use a last lap pass to score the win.”
Friday night the busy weekend in Cromwell kicked off with Myers lining up 13th in his first heat race before he powered his way to a fifth place finish. Lining up on the front row of his second heat, the Sebastopol, CA driver was able to get the jump and tally the win.
Lining up third in the feature event, Myers settled in as the race came to life. Searching around the speedway, he was able to move into second but didn’t seem to have a way to mount a challenge for the top spot.
In the race’s closing laps, Myers Jr’s car came to life and he was able to cut into the leader’s gap, but the youngster rand out of time and settled for a second place finish.
Back at Central Motor Speedway on Saturday night for War of the Wings action, Myers Jr timed in seventh fastest in qualifying before picking up first and sixth place finishes in heat race competition.
Finishing third in the Dash, Myers again found himself in the second row of the feature event. Jumping into second, Myers Jr chased after Friday night’s winner, Jamie Duff, who was again out front and setting a torrid pace.
Looking like it would be another second place finish on this final night of 2023, Myers Jr kept digging as time ran out. Taking the white flag in second, Myers Jr closed in on Duff through turns one and two, and was able to beat him into turns three and four as he stuck the bottom, took the lead, and won the drag race to finish line to pick up the win.
“It is great to have a car that good at the end of the feature each night,” Myers Jr added. “It put us in a great spot on both nights, and on Saturday we were able to take advantage and grab a win. I’m very thankful that the Anderson family continues to give me a great opportunity in NZ, and looking forward to having a good start to 2024.”
