PETERSEN MEDIA: Getting back to racing in the ‘Golden State’ over the weekend, Joel Myers Jr and the Vertullo Motorsports battled back from the ‘B’ Main and charged from 22nd to earn a 10th place finish at Silver Dollar Speedway’s Summer Nationals.
“We made a couple of changes to our program, and I am really excited to have Willie Kahne on board,” Joel Myers Jr said. “We changed a few things all night long to try and find a good balance on our car and I really think we made some good progress.”
With 61 cars on hand, Myers Jr timed the Starr Property Management /Morrison Concrete/Hi-Plains Building Division backed no. 83v mount in seventh fastest in his qualifying group.
Gridding the field form seventh in his heat race, Myers Jr would pocket a sixth-place finish which forced him into the ‘B’ Main. Lining up mid-pack, Myers Jr had some ground to make up with just four transfer positions up for grabs into the 30-lap feature event.
Making some positive changes for the ‘B’, the Sebastopol, CA youngster had his elbows up as he went to work on the famed ¼ mile bullring. Working his way through the field, Myers Jr was able to keep his night alive as he worked his way up to a second-place finish in the semi.
Continuing to tune on the Vertullo Motorsports entry, ‘Jr’ then took the green flag for the 30-lap feature from the 22ndstarting position. With early stoppages leading to double-file restarts, Myers Jr would pick up track position with each drop of the green flag.
Having some good fortune on lap 19, ‘Jr’ jumped into 11th, and then made his way into the Top-10 with seven laps remaining in the feature.
Fighting for more, Myers Jr would be unable to continue his charge as he capped the night off with a hard-fought 10thplace finish.
“We got better all night on Friday, and Saturday got off to a really good start before the race got rained out,” Myers Jr said. “Again, big thanks to Willie for coming on board, and to Cody and Rich for working hard all night long on Friday and Saturday.”
