PETERSEN MEDIA: Taking part in the return to Sprint Car racing at the Silver Dollar Fair in Chico, CA, Joel Myers Jr had a good showing on Sunday night as he picked up his first Top-Five on the season since getting his CA season underway just over a month ago.
“We had been a little off during our first couple of races out this year, and we changed some things before Petaluma last week, and I was happy with how those changes reacted on the slick surface that we had on Sunday night in Chico, CA,” Joel Myers Jr said.
26 cars checked in for 410ci action the ¼ mile bullring on Sunday night and the Sebastopol, CA driver timed in second fastest in his group aboard the All About Fire Protection/Hi-Plains Building Division/Dirt Dudes Excavating backed No. 46Jr.
Lining up on the front row of his heat race alongside Andy Forsberg, Myers settled into second as Forsberg got the initial jump in the eight-lap shootout.
Hounding Forsberg, Myers Jr’s second place finish was good enough to qualify him for the nightly redraw as the five-pill put him in the third row of the 30-lap feature event.
When the feature came to life, Myers Jr had a strong car underneath him as he wasted no time working his way into the third position. An early restart saw Myers Jr make a bid on second, but as he got pinned to and almost into the infield, he would lose several positions as he fell back to eighth.
Quickly getting back up to speed, ‘Jr’ was back up into sixth on the 19th lap as he continued to look for a way back into the Top-Five as the track became bottom dominant late in the feature event.
Powering his way into fifth on the 22nd marker, Myers Jr held the spot and closed his night out with a fifth-place finish.
“We had a good jump on an early restart, but we got pinched down and it broke our momentum and cost us a few spots,” Myers Jr said. “We have been working hard in the shop the last two weeks and I think we are seeing that effort pay off. We are all excited for two nights at Placerville Speedway this weekend.”
