Joel Myers Jr Scores Second and Third Place Finishes at Las Vegas Dirt Nationals

PETERSEN MEDIA: Taking part in the Las Vegas Dirt Nationals at the Las Vegas Dirt Track last week with Doug Rutz and Rutz Racing, Joel Myers Jr overcame an opening night flip to net second and third place finishes.

“Thursday night I felt really good in my heat race, but unfortunately I clipped an infield tire while I was working the bottom and I went for a pretty good ride,” Myers Jr said. “We went to a backup car and didn’t make the call for the feature that night as we prepared for the final two nights of action.”

Running second in his heat race on Thursday night in Sin City, contact with a barrier would send the Sebastopol, CA driver up the track in a series of roll overs and would essentially bring his opening night to an end.

With the team going to a back up car for the rest of the weekend, Myers Jr would continue to show speed on the ½ mile speedway located just outside of the famed Las Vegas ‘Strip’.

Windy conditions would greet the competitors as the sun began to set in the desert, but Myers Jr would not let his slow him as he was able to pick up the heat race win and set himself up nicely for the impending feature event.

As the wind worsened, officials opted to postpone the feature for the winged cars and decided to run the Friday night feature after Saturday night hot laps took place.

Deciding to make a tire change before the make up feature, Myers would take the green flag from the back of the pack per series and event rules. Flexing his muscles from the tail end of the field, ‘Jr’ would race his way up to second when a timely caution would bunch the field back up and give the youngster a shot at the race lead.

The ensuring restart did not go the way Junior had hoped and it would actually cost him a spot as he capped the first feature of the night off with a third-place finish.

Moving into heat race action for the night show, Myers Jr would again pocket another heat race win and put himself up front for the start of the final feature event of the weekend.

When the race came to life, the 15-year-old pilot would settle into third for the opening 10-laps before he made a big move that netted him the lead for the next four circuits.

A lap 14 restart would see the field line up on his rear bumper and he would lose the top spot to Garren Linder and would slip back to second where he would go on to close the weekend out.

“I really want to thank Doug Rutz and my family for all of their support and making this trip possible,” Myers Jr added. “It was great to get back to racing so early in the year, and I am looking forward to my first race with Vertullo Motorsports here in about a month.”
