Justin Sanders Picks Up Two Top-5’s as He Readies for HK Classic Weekend

PETERSEN MEDIA: Getting in two nights of racing before a big two night event takes place at him home track this weekend, Justin Sanders came oh so close to picking up his 16th win of the season as he settled for second on Friday night at Ocean Speedway before tallying a fifth place run with the King of the West Series on Saturday night at Petaluma Speedway.

“We weren’t able to pick up any wins over the weekend, but we had two pretty good cars,” Justin Sanders said. “Friday night I kind of made a mistake in traffic late in the race, and Saturday night we were right in the thick of things.”

Checking in at Ocean Speedway on Friday night for a bit of HK Classic Tune Up, Sanders would time the JSR No. 17 in second fastest in qualifying time trials before picking up a fourth-place finish in his heat race aboard the North County Plastering/Andy’s Construction/Roadside 24Hr Service backed machine.

Moving into the Dash, the Aromas, CA pilot would finish second and find himself on the front row of the feature event as he looked to pocket his 16th win of the 2021 season.

When the green flag was displayed to the field, Sanders was hard on the throttle as he jumped out to the early lead. Setting a torrid pace, the only thing that could slow Sanders was a couple of stoppages that were forced at the race’s halfway point.

Following a pause in the action on the 18th lap, Sanders would continue to lead the way, but an extended green flag run would see him get into traffic and allow Dominic Scelzi to close in on him.

Working in traffic, Scelzi would drop Sanders back to the second position with two to go, and a late yellow would give Sanders one final opportunity to make a late race move.

The ensuring restart would see Sanders get close to Scelzi, but on this night he would come up short as he picked up a second-place finish.

Saturday night the scene shifted to Petaluma Speedway where Sanders returned to the seat of the Antaya Motorsports No. 16a machine for more King of the West action.

Timing in third fastest in qualifying time trials, Sanders would finish fourth in his heat race. Not having enough points to make his way into the Dash, Sanders would take the green flag from the eighth starting position.

As the feature event came to life, Sanders would hold strong inside the Top-10 as he was able to run in the seventh position for much of the event.

Though he would slip back to eighth at the race’s halfway point, Sanders continued to work around the black gumbo as he fought for position. Abel to jump into fifth during a furious charge with 10-to-go, Sanders would again find himself battling with Dominic Scelzi as well as Bud Kaeding.

When the checkered flag flew, Sanders capped the weekend off with a fifth-place finish to give himself two on the weekend.

“I’s a little bummed we ended up second on Friday night, but the car felt good and I am looking forward to this weekend at Ocean Speedway in the 17 as well as the 16A cars,” Sanders added.

Justin and his team would like to thank North County Plastering, Alkaline88, Andy’s Construction, Roadside 24hr Service, Wicked Cushion, Roger’s Diner, Factory Kahne, BG Labels and Tee’s, Walker Performance Filtration, Dixon and Son Tires, Ernie’s Service Center, East Lake Village, FK Rod Ends, Triple X Race Co., DMI, Keizer Wheels, Wings Unlimited, Ti64 Titanium, AIS Heating and Sheet Metal, Fred Lint and Family, JonSan Racing, Sandblast Service, G&N Construction, Steitz Towing, Durden Construction, Ernie’s Service Center, and Steve Duppman Racing for their continued support in 2021.
