PETERSEN MEDIA: Making the trip back to Cottage Grove Speedway as part of the first Summer Thunder Series event in the state of Oregon, Justyn Cox made it another first as he became the first Californian to win with the series by way of his Friday night triumph.

“Cottage Grove Speedway is always a blast and I am really excited we were able to get back up there over the weekend and get a win,” Cox said. “We were really fast both nights, and charged from 11th to second on Saturday night.”

Cox opened the weekend up on Friday night by timing the Berco Redwood/Berry Lumber/Trex No. 31c entry in fifth quickest in time trials before racing to a second place finish during heat race competition.

Drawing the three in the feature event redraw, Cox would take the green flag in the third starting position. Getting a great start, the Clarksburg, CA driver would race his way into the lead on lap three after a battle with Trevor Cook.

With a trio of stoppages slowing his pace, Cox would not let the stoppages break his rhythm as he would remain strong out front and race his way to his second win of the season at the ¼ mile facility and his fourth overall in 2017.

Back at it on Saturday night, Cox would go out last for time trials but would still turn in a good lap he ended up putting the PM Truck Repair/Justice Brothers/K&N machine 11th on the speed chart before winning his heat race.

Not qualifying for the redraw on this night, Cox would take the green flag from the sixth row. Continuing to show off a very strong car to the northwest contingent, Cox would find himself up in sixth spot in the first five laps of the feature event.

Continuing to make up ground and put his car wherever he needed, Cox ran in the third spot when the caution was displayed on the 14th lap.

Chasing after the lead duo of Henry Van Dam and Eric Fisher, Cox would try to use the top to reel them in but as he lost ground he would drop back to the bottom.

Getting into traffic the leaders would be forced to move around, and Cox would be there to take advantage, as he was able to ride the bottom groove to the second spot where he would finish.

“We had a really good car on Saturday night and I think we were definitely good enough to win, but coming from the sixth row you really need all the breaks to go your way and we just got held up in traffic there at the end a little,” Cox added. “We have a good thing going right now, and I am hoping we can get back to CA this weekend and run well at Placerville Speedway on Saturday night.”

The Cox Racing team would like to thank Berco Redwood, Berry Lumber, Trex, PM Truck Repair, Justice Brothers, K&N, LRB, Konnected, A.R.T., Sacramento Theatrical Lighting, EyeLusions, All American Powder Coating, Coos Bay Speedway, Swimming Pool Perfections, Tim’s Hot Rod Shop, Shell Shock, Moyle Race Engines, and Manzer Motorsports for their support in 2017!

2017 BY THE NUMBERS: Races-36, Wins-4, Top 5’s-14, Top 10’s-22

ON TAP: After several weeks away from racing in CA, Cox makes his return on Saturday night as he is scheduled to compete in Placerville, CA on Saturday.
