Justyn Cox Sixth and 11th at Cotton Classic
PETERSEN MEDIA: Taking part in the 33rd Annual Cotton Classic over the weekend, Justyn Cox returned to the seat of the Bates Motorsports No. 42x with the Sprint Car Challenge Tour where he would finish sixth in the feature, and was also at the helm of his family owned No. 31c where he pocketed an 11th place finish with the King of the West Series.
“It was good to run well with Bates Motorsports again, and keep them within striking distance of the Roth Motorsports team for the owners championship heading into Stockton in a couple of weeks,” Cox said. “They really have provided me with a great opportunity to end the season, and I am very thankful.”
Timing the R&B Company backed machine in fifth quickest in SCCT group qualifying, Cox would have a nice heat race that saw him advance from his fifth starting position to finish fourth and move into the 30-lap Cotton Classic feature event.
Taking the green flag from the 16th starting position, Cox would continue to move the Bates Motorsports entry forward just as he did in his first weekend at the controls at Placerville Speedway. Getting stronger as the race went on, Cox would find himself up in fourth with just 12 laps to go in the race, as he turned in his fastest lap of the race.
A late restart would see Cox get forced to the top of the track and it would result in him getting shuffled back a few positions before he worked his way back up to sixth.
Chasing after Willie Croft and Kyle Hirst in the closing laps, Cox’s efforts would continue to get negated by yellow flags and he would wind up taking the checkered flag sixth.
King of the West Series action saw the Clarksburg, CA driver have a bit of a long night as a torsion bar would go south in time trials resulting in him timing in 15th quickest in qualifying time trials.
Making repairs before heat race action, Cox would have a nice heat race that saw him work his way up to finish fourth which placed him 15th on the starting grid for this feature event.
Fighting some engine issues in the feature event, Cox would be unable to work the bottom of the track as it would cause his engine to stumble. Forced to commit to the top, Cox would take what he could get as he finished 11th.
“It was tough in the 410ci as he fought issues most of the night,” Cox said. “We have been fighting this 410ci engine a lot and had hopes to have the issues worked out but still had some surface. Thanks to my guys for their hard work all night.”
