Justyn Cox Sixth with Sprint Car Challenge Tour at Calistoga Speedway

PETERSEN MEDIA: A busy weekend of racing for Justyn Cox and the Cox Family Racing team was highlighted by a sixth place finish on Saturday night at Calistoga Speedway with the Sprint Car Challenge Tour.
“It was a busy weekend for our team, and unfortunately we still struggled with the 410 car,” Cox said. “Luckily our 360 was really good and we finished sixth at the Dirt Classic on Saturday night and were running second on Sunday in Petaluma until we got ran over and lost a tire with a couple laps to go.”
Competing with both the King of the West Series and SCCT during Saturday’s Dirt Classic at Calistoga Speedway, Cox’s night would get off to a nice start in 360 action.
Timing the Berco Redwood/Berry Lumber/Trex machine in fourth fastest in his qualifying group, the Clarksburg, CA driver would line up on the pole of his heat race.
Getting the early jump when the green flag waived, Cox would fall back to second in turns three and four as Rico Abreu would get around him and take over the point. Finishing second, Cox would move into the Dash where he would line up in the sixth starting spot.
Losing a couple of positions when the Dash came to life, Cox would finish eighth and find himself in the fourth row for the feature event.
The opening laps of the feature event would be rough on Cox and company as he would lose several spots and fall back to the 19th spot. Trying to right the ship, Cox would take advantage of the restart on the 15th lap. Getting his wing back, Cox would go to work on the bottom of the speedway, and make some serious headway on the double file restart as he would jump up to the 11th spot.
A restart with five to go, would see Cox again have a good restart as he would sneak into the fifth spot, only to get passed late as he settled for sixth at the stripe.
Issues with his 410 early in the night saw Cox take a qualifying lap at the end of the session and manage to time in 14th fastest overall.
Finishing sixth in his heat, Cox would just never seem to get going in the feature event as he would line up in the 14th starting position and finish 11th.
Sunday night saw the team get their third race of the weekend in as they took part in the Fair Race at Petaluma Speedway.
Timing in fifth fastest during time trials, Cox would pick up a wind during heat race action and earn a spot in the Dash.
Finishing third in the Dash, Cox would line up in the second row of the 25-lap feature event. On a very hooked up racing surface, Cox would attack the Petaluma Gumbo as he jumped into the second spot and spent most of the race chasing after Michael Kofoid.
Getting close to Kofoid a couple of times, the track wasn’t prone to passing as must of the field was hard on the throttle lap after lap. With just a couple of laps remaining, Cox would feel another driver climb over his right rear , and it would result in a flat tire and a DNF for the Clarksburg, CA native.
“We have been really good in the 360 this year, and we were on our way to a podium finish on Sunday, until we king of got the raw end of the deal,” Cox said. “This weekend we will try again with the 410ci in Chico and then get back in the 360 at Placerville and Stockton.”
The Cox Racing team would like to thank Berco Redwood, Berry Lumber, Trex, PM Truck Repair, Justice Brothers, K&N, LRB, Konnected, A.R.T., Sacramento Theatrical Lighting, EyeLusions, All American Powder Coating, Coos Bay Speedway, Swimming Pool Perfections, Tim’s Hot Rod Shop, Shell Shock, Moyle Race Engines, and Manzer Motorsports for their support in 2017!
