PETERSEN MEDIA: Making the trip to Cottage Grove, OR over the weekend to take part in one of his favorite event, the Marvin Smith Memorial, Justyn Cox would have an eventful weekend that ultimately saw him finish third in the Sunday night feature event for the second year in a row.

“It was an eventful weekend, it kind of stings running third for the second year in a row since that is one I want really bad but it was still a great result.”

The two-day event kicked off on Saturday night with Cox timing the Berco Redwood/Berry Lumber/Trex backed No. 31C machine in 6th quick overall and fifth quick in his group.

Lining up fourth in his heat race, Cox would work his way forward to finish in the second position and the way it worked out Cox’s qualifying time would not be good enough to earn him a spot in the Dash.

Still locked into the preliminary night feature event, Cox would grid the field from the ninth starting position. On a very racy surface, Cox would have his elbows up as he raced his way into the Top-Five.

Needing to be inside the Top-Four to lock into Saturday nights’ feature event, Cox would make incidental contact vying for the position and it would result in him having a right rear flat.

Going to the work area, the Cox Family Racing team would bolt some fresh rubber onto the No. 31c machine, and Cox would tag the field in the 20th spot. With a bleeder issue hampering him, Cox ‘s right rear would quickly bleed down to just 4 pounds of air pressure and it would make for a very tight racecar.

Doing all he could, Cox would work his way up to finish eighth in the feature event.

Back in action on Sunday night, Cox would get off to a great start as he would time in 2nd quickest in qualifying time trials. Lining up in the sixth starting spot in his heat race, Cox played it safe as he raced his way into the fourth position which was good enough to get him into the Feature event as well as the Dash.

Finishing in second in the Dash, Cox would line up on front row of the 41-lap Marvin Smith Memorial feature event. As the race came to life, Cox would settle into the second position as he chased after early leader, Buddy Kofoid.

Closing in on Kofoid, Cox would admittedly get a little impatient and it resulted in him getting up over the cushion and losing several positions.

Still with a bad fast racecar underneath him, Cox would work his way forward and make a move on Kyle Miller late in the race to get back into third and then took advantage of a mistake by Kofoid to take over second late in the race.

Two attempts at a green-white-checkered finish would see Cox throw the kitchen sink at Logan Forler, but it final attempt would actually see Jason Solwold get underneath him as Cox settled for his second consecutive third place finish at the Marvin Smith Memorial.

“I had an opportunity late in the race and I had to try and make something happen,” Cox said. “Unfortunately it didn’t work out and we lost a spot when it was all said and done. I have to thank my guys for all of their hard work this weekend, it seemed like stayed pretty busy. Saturday night we had to change torque ball housings between hot laps and time trials, and I really have to thank Mel Roberts for lending our team a hand.”

The Cox Racing team would like to thank Berco Redwood, Berry Lumber, Trex, PM Truck Repair, Justice Brothers, K&N, LRB, Konnected, A.R.T., Sacramento Theatrical Lighting, College Cyclery, Arai, Racing Optics, All American Powder Coating, Coos Bay Speedway, Swimming Pool Perfections, Tim’s Hot Rod Shop, Shell Shock, Moyle Race Engines, and Manzer Motorsports for their support in 2018!
