Kerry Madsen Lands on Gold Cup Race of Champions Podium
PETERSEN MEDIA- A strong showing out West culminated with Kerry Madsen parking his Keneric Racing/American Racing Custom Wheels No. 29 machine on the front stretch at the Silver Dollar Speedway on Saturday night as he netted a third place finish during the Gold Cup Race of Champions.
“We had a great car out west all week, and it is really nice to get a podium at the Gold Cup,” Madsen said. “It was a grueling week and my guys did a fantastic job.”
A busy week of racing started in Washington and ended in California, as Madsen earned a sixth place finishes at both the Gray’s Harbor Raceway and the Cottage Grove Speedway to open the week.
Getting into Chico, CA to open the Gold Cup Race of Champions on Friday night, Madsen would time his Keneric Racing/American Racing No. 29 machine in third fastest in his qualifying flight.
Finishing third in his heat race, things would go Madsen’s way as he snuck into the Dash where a charge from sixth to third put him in the second row of the 30-lap A Main.
On an extremely slick track, Madsen ran in the third spot as he chased after the lead duo. As the track started to get technical, Madsen would find himself battling with DJ Netto and Donny Schatz in the closing laps. Working on the extremely thick cushion, Madsen would take the checkered flag with a fifth place finish.
Saturday night saw Madsen flirt with the Silver Dollar Speedway track record in time trials, as he earned his 10th quick time award of the season. Following a third place finish in the Dash, Madsen would again finish third in the Dash, putting him in the second row of the 40-lap Gold Cup finale.
After track work prior to the feature brought speed back to the track, Madsen would ride around in the third spot as the first 14-laps ripped off caution free at a torrid pace.
When the race got back going after a lap 16 yellow, Madsen would find himself in a hot battle with Shane Stewart for the third position aboard his American Racing Custom Wheels machine.
Exchanging the spot in traffic a few times in traffic, Madsen was able to keep his competitor at bay, as he worked the bottom of the speedway. The finish on this night got exciting as the duo would make contact out of turn four, but Madsen was able to keep the upper-hand and finish on the podium.
Fresh off of his podium effort, the series would close out the trip on Sunday night as they returned to the Antioch Speedway. Timing in 13th, Madsen would move forward during the feature event as he carved his way to eighth on the slick surface to close out a busy week of racing.
“We ran so well all week, and it was good to not finish outside of the Top-10,” Madsen said. “We would have loved to get another win for Pete and Bob Gavranich, and everyone at American Racing Custom Wheels, but fortunately we will get another chance this weekend.”
