PETERSEN MEDIA: As the curtain dropped on the King of the West Series’ 60thseason, it was Hanford, CA driver DJ Netto standing under the confetti shower, celebrating his first career series championship.
“When the checkered flag flew on Saturday, all I could say to myself was ‘wow, we did it.’” DJ Netto said. “I tried to keep a level head about it these last few races. It was such a tight battle all year long, I just wanted to stay out of my head and focus on running well.”
Heading into Saturday night’s season finale event at the Stockton Dirt Track, Netto entered the event in a deadlock with Bud Kaeding atop the standings, with Dominic Scelzi just seven points behind the duo in third.
Hungry for his first series title, Netto did everything he needed to do on Saturday from the time his team unloaded in the pit area on Saturday night. Gaining points on his championship competitors in time trials, Netto’s third place effort would set the tone for his championship night.
Getting through his heat race unscathed, Netto would run third in the Dash, and find himself in the second row of the 30-lap feature event. With a two point cushion over Kaeding heading into the feature, Netto’s night gave him the upper hand as he had a prime starting position.
Needing to stay up front to secure the title, Netto did just that. Running second in the early stages of the race, Netto would battle with Willie Croft for the runner up position. Though he would give the position up, Netto was continuing to take care of the bigger task at hand.
When the checkered flag was displayed, Netto would occupy the final spot on the podium, and was officially crowned the 2019 King of the West Series Champion, as his name is now etched in history with so many legends of the sport.
“I really have to thank my family for believing in me way back when I was 16,” DJ Netto said. “Winning a KWS title has been something I have strived for, and to do it now is pretty special. So many people to thank for this, but I couldn’t have done it without my family first and foremost. Brad Goebel started the year with us, and was extremely instrumental in our start to the year. Though he left for a really good job opportunity I still want to thank him a ton. Drew Warner worked all week to make sure our car was ready to go for the finale, and Lee Lindgren and Jason Riley were in the pits making sure we had a great car to pull this off.”
ON TAP:Netto will be idle this weekend before returning to Keller Auto Speedway on November 16th.
