(PETERSEN MEDIA- Aptos, CA)- The battle for the lead during the Wingless Series Presented by Joe Hunt Magnetos feature event on Saturday night was simply worth the price of admission. After a torrid three-car battle for much of the race, it was Klint Simpson celebrating the big time win when the dust settled.
Colton Slack and Austin Liggett would lead the field to green, and as Liggett looked to get the jump getting into turns one and two, Slack was able to power into the lead on the back stretch, as Klint Simpson and Terry Schank worked into the Top-Four on an extremely slick Ocean Speedway.
The battle for second would heat up on the fourth lap as Simpson and Liggett battled side-by-side, and as that happened Slack was able to get some breathing room as he opened his lead up every so slightly.
A lap seven restart would see the battle for second continue to entertain the crowd, and behind them the battle for fourth was just an entertaining as Terry Schank and Gary Nelson, Jr were exchanging sliders for position.
Back up front, Slack would soon feel pressure from both Liggett and Simpson as the battle for the lead became a three-car party as the race neared the halfway point. With the crowd on the edge of their seat a blanket could be thrown over Slack, Liggett, and Simpson as they broke away from the field and raced three-wide at times.
With all eyes locked on the battle up front, Nick Larson was putting together a nice charge as he worked into the fourth spot on the 13th lap and chased after the lead trio.
On the 15th lap, Liggett would power into the lead and instantly pull away from Simpson and Slack as he opened up a healthy lead, only to see the caution flag fly on the 17th lap.
When the race came back to life, so did the three-car battle up front, and this time it was Simpson forging his way forward to take the lead while Slack and Liggett flanked him.
The final restart of the night came with just four laps to go, and Liggett did everything he could to get around Simpson as he looked high with much of the field using the low side of the speedway. Unable to find grip, Liggett would slip back to the third spot on the last lap of the as Slack took over the second position as Simpson beat the field to the checkered flag to score his first win of the season with the series.
Adam Christian would make a late race move to take the fourth spot, as Nick Larson finished fifth, Schank sixth, Nelson, Jr, seventh, Angelique Bell eighth, Cody Fendley ninth, and Shawn Jones rounded out the Top-10.
24 cars checked into the Ocean Speedway for the series’ first ever appearance at the speedway and it was Colton Slack earning quick time honors.
A three-heat program was in play on Saturday night and wins went to Nelson, Jr, Jimmy Christian, and Adam Christian. Colton Slack picked up the Dash win, and led the field to green for the 25-lap feature event.
