PETERSEN MEDIA- With the Ocean Speedway hosting the USAC West Coast 360 Series on Friday night, Kyler Shaw took the opportunity to shed his wing and make his first ever start aboard a traditional sprint car, and the end result was a promising ninth place finish.
“I had an absolute blast racing without the wings, and am already wanting to do it again,” Shaw said. “There were some crazy wrecks to see, but I sure am glad everyone was okay.”
With 21 cars checked into John Prentice’s Ocean Speedway, Shaw timed his Shaw Structures Unlimited/PM$ Investments/Stan Yockey Motorsports No. 92 machine in 17th fastest as he was still making adjustments on the fly early in the night.
Starting on the pole of his heat race, the Fresno, CA driver took a liking to the high side of the speedway as he jumped out to the early lead with non-wing ace, Richard Vander Weerd hot on his tail.
Losing the lead to Vander Weerd, Shaw would continue to stay on the top as he lost a few more positions, but the end result was a fourth place finish, giving him his time back for the feature event.
Lining up in the ninth row for the feature event, Shaw steadily picked up a few spots, as he was also gifted a few with a couple of hard wrecks.
Finding himself in the Top-10 in the closing laps, Shaw began to battle with the other Vander Weerd, Jace, as they battled for the eighth spot.
Though he couldn’t make any passes stick, Shaw was still able to hang on to a Top-10 finish in his first ever 360ci non-wing event, as he tallied a ninth place finish.
“All in all it was a great night, and I had a ton of fun,” he added. “We raced well, and took advantage of some other drivers misfortune, and we ended up with a pretty good finish.”
Kyler would like to thank Shaw Structures Unlimited, PM$ Investments, Stan Yockey Motorsports, Pro Signs, 4FourGraphics, F4st Four Media, Borrelo Racing Engines, Uncle Dave’s Ranch, and Sid’s Smokehouse for their support.
2014 BY THE NUMBERS: Starts-19, Wins-0, Top 5’s-0, Top 10’s-9.
ON TAP: Kyler will now return to action at the Placerville Speedway on Saturday night.
