PETERSEN MEDIA- Traveling to the Santa Maria Speedway with the USAC West Coast 360’s to take part in the 30th Annual Bud Stanfield Memorial, Richard Vander Weerd would see a mid-race flip knock him from contention while running inside the Top-10.

“We had a pretty good start to the night, but in the feature event we just couldn’t seem to get going,” Richard Vander Weerd said. “Running in the Top-10 at the midpoint of the race, a car spun and came down the track resulting in us getting upside down.”

Timing the Vander Weerd Construction/Stonegate Development/Battery Worx No. 10 machine in seventh fastest, Vander Weerd would find himself on the front row of his heat race.

From the outside of the front row, Vander Weerd would jump out to the early lead and cruise to his second USAC West Coast 360 heat race of the year and put himself in the main event inversion.

Lining up in the third row for the 30-lap A-Main, Vander Weerd would struggle to get moving forward as he ran in the sixth spot in the early goings of the feature.

With traffic coming into play quick on the tight confines of the Santa Maria Speedway, Vander Weerd would lose a few positions as he now ran in the eighth spot. Working the low side of the speedway, trouble would ensue on the 16th lap.

A car running the top side of the speedway would get out of shape and shoot down the track and come into contact with the Visalia, CA driver’s entry, and would result in Vander Weerd flipping down the front straightaway bringing his night to a close.

“It was a tough end to our night, but I am thankful my safety gear did it’s job,” Vander Weerd said. “Congrats to my brother on getting the win, and we will try again this week.”

Richard and his Vander Weerd Racing team would like to thank Vander Weerd Construction, Stonegate Development, Battery Worx, Mid-Valley Pipe, Basic Industries, Factory Kahne Shocks, Steve Watt Enterprises, FK Rod Ends, PXP Racewear and K&N for their support in 2016.

2016 BY THE NUMBERS: Starts-21, Wins-2, Top 5’s-10, Top 10’s-15.

ON TAP: Richard will be back in action with the USAC West Coast 360’s for two events this weekend as he will travel to the Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, CA on Friday night before racing at the Keller Auto Speedway in Hanford, CA on Saturday night.
