PETERSEN MEDIA: Looking like he was well on his way to another top finish with the USAC Western States Midget Series, a late mistake would result in a roll over for series points leader, Austin Liggett.
“We had a really good car, and we were well on our way to a third-place finish,” Austin Liggett said. “Unfortunately, the car stepped out on me on the last lap and I over corrected and it got me upside down.”
Taking to the tiny confines of the Ventura Raceway in Ventura, CA, Liggett would get his Excel Environmental Services/Liggett Trucking/Tool Technology backed No. 83 machine timed in fastest overall in qualifying time trials.
Moving into heat race action, passing would prove to be extremely difficult as Liggett would get going. Finishing back in the seventh position, the Tracy, CA driver would grid the field from the eighth starting position for the 30-lap feature event.
With the track taking more of a racing shape for the feature, Liggett would make some nice moves on the bullring as he carved his way forward with precision. Working all the way up to third, Liggett looked to be well on his way to another podium finish with the series.
Taking the white flag, Liggett’s entry would get out of shape on him on the final circuit and as he tried to get things back under control, it would ultimately result in Liggett getting his machine upside down.
“I absolutely hate it for my guys,” Liggett said. “We had a really good car in the feature, and these guys deserved a podium run. I really have to thank my Mom and Dad, as well as Matt, Landon, and Angela for all of their help.”
Looking forward, Liggett now eyes a return trip to Hanford, CA in Non-Winged 360ci action this weekend. Following his wild ride at the track a few weeks back, Liggett looks forward for a chance at redemption on the 3/8 mile located on the Kings County Fairgrounds.
Austin Liggett Racing would like to thank Excel Environmental Services, Liggett Trucking, Tool Technology, Hurst Fabrications, Maxwell Industries, Shine Photography, ZMAX Racing Oil, and Transport Products Unlimited for their support.
BY THE NUMBERS: Races-11, Wins-1, Top 5’s-7, Top 10’s-8
ON TAP: Liggett will be back in action on Saturday night in Hanford, CA.
