PETERSEN MEDIA: Austin Liggett and company wasted no time getting their new midget into victory lane, as the Tracy, CA based driver was the class of the field on Saturday night in Merced, CA with the USAC Western States Midgets.
“It is pretty cool to get down to Merced and grab our first Midget win as a team,” Austin Liggett said. “8 years ago we picked up our first sprint car win at the same track, so to have this come full circle is pretty cool.”
With 19 cars checked in at the revamped Merced Speedway, Liggett would time the Excel Environmental Services/Liggett Trucking/Tool Technology backed No. 83 machine in fourth quickest in time trials.
Going from fourth to second in his heat race, it was apparent that Liggett had a strong machine underneath him as he headed to the feature event where he would take the green flag from the third starting position.
A torrid battle for the lead early in the race, saw Liggett make his case for the early lead, but would settle into second as he stalked race leader, Maria Cofer.
Even though he had his hands full with Shane Golobic attacking him for the second position, Liggett would continue to hold the position as he waited for an opportunity to pounce on the race lead.
With seven laps to go, Liggett would get the opening he needed as he was capitalize on a mistake by the leader as he would slide up in front of her in turns one and two and quickly give himself some breathing room.
Looking strong up front, Liggett would negate a last lap pass attempt from Shane Golobic as he held on to claim his first Midget win.
“My dad had our car dialed, and like I said early, it is pretty cool to get our first midget win at the same place we got our first sprint car win,” Liggett added. “Thanks to my mom and Britton Bock for all their help all night, and I really hope my mom enjoys this for a birthday present.”
Austin Liggett Racing would like to thank Excel Environmental Services, Liggett Trucking, Tool Technology, Hurst Fabrications, Maxwell Industries, Shine Photography, and Morris Motorsports for their support.
