Liggett Third at Merced Speedway

PETERSEN MEDIA: Though he continues to run a limited schedule in 2022, Austin Liggett still has plenty of speed when he shows up. Saturday night in Merced, CA, Liggett battled for another win before settling for a third-place finish on the high banked bullring.

“I didn’t get timed in well at all, but the guys went to work, and we raced really well in our heat and the feature,” Austin Liggett said. “We had our chances, but my attempts to get the top spot just didn’t quite stick and work out.”

With 21 USAC Western States Midgets checked in at Merced Speedway, Liggett timed the Excel Environmental Services/Liggett Trucking/Tool Technology backed No. 83 entry in 12th fastest in qualifying time trials.

Having a great start in his heat race, Liggett was able to jump out front and race to the win on the slick racing surface, and that helped improve his starting position after his qualifying time.

On a track that continued to slick off, Liggett took the green flag from the seventh starting position and quickly began working his way forward. Slicing and dicing his way forward on the central CA bullring, Liggett moved into third as he set his sights on the lead duo of Michael Faccinto and Ryan Bernal.

Racing in traffic, the leaders worked the bottom and Liggett continue to make his money riding the Merced Speedway rim. As the Bernal and Faccinto got bottled up, Liggett had the momentum and powered his way to the lead only to see the caution fly and negate his efforts with just eight laps remaining.

The final restart saw Liggett make another big move attempt, but he was unable to make the pass stick as he settled into third when the checkered flag flew on the feature event.

“I really want to thank everyone that was in the pits working on our car because they gave me a car that was capable of winning,” Liggett added. “I also want to thank all of our marketing partners for their continued support.”

Austin Liggett Racing would like to thank Excel Environmental Services, Liggett Trucking, Tool Technology, Hurst Fabrications, Maxwell Industries, Shine Photography, and ZMAX Racing Oil for their support.

BY THE NUMBERS: Races-6, Wins-1, Top 5’s-3, Top 10’s-5

ON TAP: Liggett’s next event is TBD.
