PETERSEN MEDIA- 2016 has been very kind to Kerry Madsen. Not even a month into the New Year, the Australian pilot has been red hot and that continued over the last week as Madsen won the King’s Challenge for the second year in a row before a second place showing during the Grand Annual Sprint Car Classic.

“It was a sensational week for this Keneric Racing/American Racing team,” Madsen explained. “We started it off well by winning the Kings Challenge and we had a really nice showing at the Classic. We would have liked to have been one spot better, but we gave it a very good go.”

After lining up on the front row for the King’s Challenge at the Borderline Speedway, ‘The Madman’ fended off the advances Robbie Farr and Dave Murcott as he captured the race win for the second consecutive year aboard the Keneric Racing/American Racing backed No. 29 machine.

Taking to the Premier Speedway on Friday night for his qualifying attempt during the Grand Annual Sprint Car Classic, Madsen timed the American Racing Custom Wheels entry in second fastest in his time trials flight before picking up heat race finishes of second place and seventh place.

Lining up eighth in the preliminary night feature event, Madsen put on an excellent charge as he flexed his muscle during the course of the race. Working his way from the fourth row, Madsen made a late move to work into the second spot.

With five laps to go he would look to chase down race leader, James McFadden who had a sizeable lead over the field. Cutting into McFadden’s lead lap after lap, Madsen would come up just short of the win at the checkered flag, but was sitting in a great place heading into Sunday night.

Starting the night 12th in points, Madsen would work his way from his fourth row starting spot in his final heat race of the weekend to finish in the second spot and earn valuable points for ‘The Classic’ feature event.

Moving to fifth in the standings, the St. Marys, NSW native would line up in the third row for the championship feature event.

Battling with the likes of Kyle Hirst and Robbie Farr, Madsen would race his way into the second spot as he ran in Jamie Veal’s wake. With the white flag in the air, Madsen would see the yellow lights flash, setting up a green-white-checkered finish, and giving him one last shot at Veal with ‘The Classic’ title on the line.

Doing all he could in the final two laps, Madsen could not get by Veal and closed his weekend out with a second place finish, a position he hope he can improve on during the Australian Title that is on tap this week.

“We had a great car, and we gave it everything we had,” Madsen added. “We would have loved to win this for the Gavranich Family and our supporters at American Racing Custom Wheels, but we will take this great finish and look ahead to the Australian Title.”

2016 BY THE NUMBERS- Starts-8, Wins-3, Top-5’s-5, Top 10’s-6
