PETERSEN MEDIA- A wet weekend plagued Ian Madsen and his KCP Racing team, but they were able to still get two races in as Madsen finished fifth with the NSL Series on Thursday night in Farmington, MO before limping to a sixth place finish on Sunday night in Sun Prairie, WI with the IRA Series.
“The rain is getting frustrating, that is for sure, but I am thankful to have a team that is willing to travel a little bit to get a race in,” Ian Madsen said.
Heading to the tight confines of the St. Francois County Raceway in Farmington, MO on Thursday night with the National Sprint League, Ian Madsen got his night started off by timing the Nehring Construction/Team Kline Electric/Logan Contractors Supply backed No. 18 machine in fourth fastest of the 41 cars entered in the race.
Lining up in the third row of his heat race, the St, Marys, NSW driver finished fifth in his heat race, to earn a spot in the nights redraw where the eight pill would put him in the fourth row of the feature event.
The St. Francois County Raceway bullring saw tight wheel-to-wheel action, and Madsen was able to fight his way forward, and through lapped traffic clean, unlike some of his competitors. Simply going where there was open real-estate in traffic, Madsen would find himself taking the checkered flag in the fifth spot, as he now sits sixth in the series’ championship standings.
“Thursday night was a good night for our team, “ Madsen noted. “We had a good run, it is just unfortunate we drew the eight pill in the redraw.”
Rain would wash out Friday’s NSL event as well as Saturday’s event at the Knoxville Raceway, so on Sunday the team decided to travel to Sun Prairie, WI to get laps on the Angel Park Speedway in preparations for the upcoming NSL race at the facility.
After timing in second fastest in time trials, Madsen would survive a hectic heat race to finish in the fourth spot, as he would find himself in the third row for the feature event.
Getting off to a great start, Madsen would find himself in the fourth spot as the field got into heavy lapped traffic within the first seven laps of the feature event. Taking advantage of the third place car spinning out, Madsen would take over the third spot.
Running a strong race, Madsen would move into the second position on the 19th lap as began chasing after the race leader. In the closing laps, Madsen would challenge for the lead relentlessly, until his tire gave way, and he would limp across the line with a sixth place finish.
“Sunday night we were really strong but just had some bad luck late in the race,” Madsen said. “We came to get some laps, and get comfortable at the track, and I think we did just that and learned some things that will help us out when the NSL races there.”
