Madsen’s Strong Weekend In California Highlighted by Fourth Place Run At Ocean Speedway

PETERSEN MEDIA- Refreshed after a weekend off from racing, Kerry Madsen and his Keneric Racing team returned to action in California over the weekend, and had a really strong showing that included a fourth place finish at the Ocean Speedway on Friday night.

“We had an awesome racecar on both Friday and Saturday night, and were in position to contend for the win on Saturday night,” Madsen explained. “We got off to a slower start than we liked this year, but like I said, we have a strong car right now and the results are coming.”

Checking in at the Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, CA on Friday night for the first time since the 2007 racing season, Madsen got acclimated well as he timed the Keneric Health Care/American Racing Wheels No. 29 machine in third fastest during a rare group qualifying session.

Starting on the front row of his heat race, ‘The Mad Man’ would get the jump on Logan Schuchart as he picked up the win and punched his ticket into the night’s Dash.

By way of his fifth place finish, the St Marys, NSW native would grid the field from the third row for the 35-lap feature event. On a track that stayed narrow for much of the night, Madsen would find himself battling with the likes of Paul McMahan and Jason Johnson in the early goings of the feature event as the field jockeyed for position on the tight ¼ mile.

After slipping back a few stops when the race came to life, Madsen would take advantage of a few restarts as he worked his way back up to finish in the fourth spot.

Making the trip to the Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, CA on Saturday night, Madsen would look to match the same success he had back in September when he finished third during the Gold Cup Race of Champions.

Timing his Morrison Racing Engines powered KPC entry in 11th fastest in time trials, Madsen’s fourth place finish in heat race action would line him up in the 11th spot for the 40-lap feature event.

On a track that was technical and giving some drivers fits, Madsen was able to work his way forward and quickly find himself up inside the Top-five. Using restarts to his advantage, Madsen was able to work into the second spot as he set his sights on the race leader, DJ Netto.

Chasing after Netto during a couple of extended green flag runs that saw the leaders encounter traffic, Madsen’s best opportunity came during a late restart.

Trying to make something happen on the low side of the speedway in turns one and two, contact between the two would see Madsen’s machine get sideways and shoot up the race track ending his bid for the Mini Gold Cup win.

Able to restart, Madsen would officially be credited with a 16th place finish.

“Our finish on Saturday doesn’t show how good we were,” Madsen added. “I hate it for my guys, my owners, and our sponsors. It would have been huge for us to get a win, but we know we have a good car and we will try again at Calistoga.”
