PETERSEN MEDIA- An extended road trip to the Midwest and East Coast came to a close over the weekend for Matt Mitchell with the conclusion of USAC’s Eastern Storm.
“It was a great trip, and it was cool to get to a lot of places I have never been to before,” Matt Mitchell said. “We had some good speed at a few places, but we also struggled at some others.”
Tuesday night the Eastern Storm kicked off at Grandview Speedway where Mitchell timed the Dunham Metal Processing/H&M Landing/Channel Island Floor Coverings backed No. 37 in fourth fastest in time trials.
Lining up sixth in his heat race, Mitchell was unable to secure a transfer to the feature event and was forced into the ‘B’. Getting more laps around Grandview, Mitchell’s fourth place finish moved him into the feature event.
Gridding the field from the 11th starting spot in the feature, Mitchell raced hard with some of the stars and cars of the USAC National Sprint Car Series as he battled for a Top-10.
When the opening round came to a close, Mitchell capped his night off with a 13th place finish.
Wednesday night was scheduled to be ran at Bridgeport Speedway, but after an afternoon rainstorm came through, track officials efforts to get the track ran in fell short and the night was ultimately cancelled.
Travelling to Big Diamond Speedway on Thursday night, Mitchell got off to a tough start as he timed in 26th fastest in time trials.
Finishing ninth in his heat, Mitchell headed to the ‘B’ with seven transfer positions up for grabs. Feeling good in the semi, a mechanical issue arose and forced Mitchell back to the pit area and ended his night early.
Friday night the series traveled to historic Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, PA. Timing in sixth fastest in qualifications, Mitchell’s fifth place finish in his heat race relegated him to the semi.
Transferring from the ‘B’ with a fourth-place finish, the Yorba Linda, CA driver lined up in the sixth row for the 30-lap feature event.
Racing around the famed ½ mile, Mitchell mixed it up with the likes of CJ Leary, Jake Swanson, and Chase Stockon as they all batted around the Top-10. When the checkered was displayed to the field, Mitchell scored an 11th place finish.
Saturday night marked Mitchell’s final night of his swing as he followed the Eastern Storm to Port Royal Speedway. Taking a liking to the ‘Speed Palace’ early in the night, Mitchell timed in sixth fastest but struggled in his heat and the ‘B’.
Unable to transfer out of his heat, Mitchell brought his trip to a close with a 10th place finish in the ‘B’.
“It was an up and down trip result wise, but we knew going to a lot of places for the first time that there would be some learning curve,” Mitchell added. “I have to thank everyone that made this trip possible.”
Matt Mitchell would like to thank Dunham Metal Processing, H&M Landing, Channel Island Floor Coverings, Maxwell Industries, Uncle Riley, FK Rod Ends, Ebbco, P1 Australia, Factory Kahne, Simpson Race Products, Vahlco Wheels, Maxim Chassis, ARP Bolts, Faas Cores, Fight Opioids, Kaeding Performance, Don Ott Racing Engines, and Campbell Brothers Storage for their support.
BY THE NUMBERS: Starts: 13, Wins: 1, Top 5’s: 3, Top-10’s: 5.
