PETERSEN MEDIA- Making the trip to Mohave Valley Speedway to battle with the USAC/CRA series, Matt Mitchell overcame some issues early in the feature event and fought his way back to finish ninth.
“It was more of an eventful night than we had hoped for,” Matt Mitchell said. “We came into the night confident after what we learned with Justin Grant a few weeks back, but unfortunately, I ran into some early issues in the ‘A’ that put us in a pretty tough spot.”
With 30 cars checked into the Arizona speed plant on Saturday night, Mitchell opened the night up by timing the Dunham Metal Processing/H&M Landing/Channel Island Floor Coverings backed No. 37 in 10th quickest in qualifying time trials.
Heat race competition saw Mitchell duke it out with Brody Roa for the top spot. When the race came to a close, the Yorba Linda, CA native settled for second which transferred him into the 30-lap feature event and lined him up in the fifth row.
As the green flag was displayed to the field, Mitchell went to work as he looked to carve his way forward. The opening lap would prove problematic for the Maxwell Industries/FK Rod Ends/Ebbco entry as Mitchell would pack the right rear full of clay as he got out of shape and slipped back several positions.
One he gathered his car back up and got back up to pace, Mitchell was back in 15th, and now dealing with a severe vibration with the wheel being packed. Despite of the difficult circumstances, Mitchell persevered as he worked his way back towards the Top-10.
Running hard, Mitchell then had his hands full as his lost brakes amidst his efforts running through traffic. Even with a couple of issues hindering him, Mitchell was able to work his way back into ninth, where he went on to finish.
“It was a long night, but we were able to turn a tough race into a decent finish,” Mitchell added. “I really want to thank my guys for their hard work, and these great companies on the side of the car for their continued support.”
Matt Mitchell would like to thank Dunham Metal Processing, H&M Landing, Channel Island Floor Coverings, Maxwell Industries, Uncle Riley, FK Rod Ends, Ebbco, P1 Australia, Factory Kahne, Simpson Race Products, Vahlco Wheels, Maxim Chassis, ARP Bolts, Faas Cores, Fight Opioids, Kaeding Performance, Don Ott Racing Engines, and Campbell Brothers Storage for their support.
BY THE NUMBERS: Starts: 1, Wins: 0, Top 5’s: 0, Top-10’s: 1.
ON TAP: Mitchell now turns his attention to USAC Silver Crown action as he will make the trip to Terre Haute, IN on April 16th.
