PETERSEN MEDIA- Getting back to action at Perris Auto Speedway on Saturday night before embarking on a busy tour in the Midwest, Matt Mitchell had a strong outing as he picked up a third place finish with the USAC/CRA Series.
“We had a great car and had a shot at the win but we punctured a tire and held on the best we could,” Matt Mitchell said. “It was good to have a lot of speed as we head out on our big Midwest trip and take on some of the best in the country.”
Checking in at ‘The Salute to Indy’ Saturday night at Perris Auto Speedway, the Yorba Linda, CA native timed the Channel Island Floor Coverings/Dunham Metal Processing/H&M Landing backed No. 37 in eighth fastest amongst the 18 drivers checked in.
Racing to a second-place finish in heat race competition, Mitchell moved into the feature event as he led the field to green in search of his second win of the season at the PAS for himself, and third overall for his team.
Getting the jump, Mitchell set a torrid pace out front as he looked extremely tough during the opening stages of the 30-lapper. Getting into traffic, Brody Roa closed in on Mitchell and was able to pace him.
Battling through traffic, Roa took command of the race lead on the 10th lap, as Mitchell hounded him in second. As the batted picked up through traffic, Mitchell was able to briefly get back into the lead on the 20th lap, but his right rear began to go down and he had to give up his line around the high side of the speedway.
Falling back to third, Mitchell hung on as best he could with the deflating tire, and capped the night off with a third place finish.
“Once our tire started to go, I couldn’t get anywhere near the top, and that cost us,” Mitchell added. “Happy with how we have felt in limited starts this year, and we are all excited to kick our trip off at Knoxville Raceway this weekend.”
