McCarl Charges to Fifth Place Finish at KWS Opener

PETERSEN MEDIA- Continuing to gel with Tarlton Motorsports and acclimate to California surfaces, Austin McCarl had a strong King of the West opener on Saturday night in Stockton, CA that ended with a fifth-place finish.

“It was a pretty solid weekend to open up our 2021 KWS campaign,” Austin McCarl said. “We timed in well, and that put us in a good position for the rest of the night.”

With 23 cars checked in to run the first points paying KWS event since the 2019 finale, McCarl timed the Tarlton and Son, Inc./EZ Haul/Executive Auto Sales backed No. 21 machine in fifth fastest in time trials.

Lining up third in his heat race, the Altoona, IA pilot settled into third when the green flag dropped but found himself in a tight battle with Kyle Hirst.

A slight mistake in the race’s closing laps would see ‘The Big Unit’ slip back to fourth and subsequently fall out of contention for a Dash berth.

Lining up ninth in the feature event on a completely re-worked Stockton Dirt Track surface, McCarl would get off to a slower start that he would have liked as he slipped back as far as 12th on the 3/8-mile facility.

Using double file restarts to his advantage when the cautions started to fall, McCarl was able to work his way back into the Top-10 as he found a line that nobody else utilized.

Continuing to gain positions at the end of the race, McCarl would cap off the King of the West opener with a fifth-place finish.

“I made a couple mistakes in the heat race and it cost us the points we needed to qualify for the Dash,’ McCarl added. “Paul Baines and Tyrone Tyra did a great job on our car for the feature, and after a tough first 10-laps we really going rolling. I can’t wait to get back in action and continue to grow with this team. I want to give another big thank you to the Tarlton family for this incredible opportunity.”

Tarlton Motorsports would like to thank Tarlton and Son, Inc., EZ Haul, Executive Auto Sales, Pabco Gypsum, Bandy and Associates, All Star Performance, and BG Lubricants for their support.

BY THE NUMBERS: Races: 5, Wins: 0, Top 5’s: 3, Top 10’s: 3.
