PETERSEN MEDIA: A frustrating trip to California for Paul McMahan and the Destiny Motorsports team ended on a high note Saturday night in Perris, CA where McMahan charged from 12th to garner a sixth place finish.
“I have felt we were in a good spot during our California swing, but circumstances seemed to hinder our results,” McMahan said. “Saturday night the guys gave me a great car and we were able to make up some ground even when rubber went down on the speedway.”
Timing the MonDak Portables/Ft. Union Supply and Trading/Champion Brand Lubricants backed No. 4 machine in ninth fastest in qualifying time trials.
Running fourth in his heat race, McMahan would move into the feature event where he would grid the field from the 12th starting spot on the southern California ½ mile.
When the green flag waived on the event, McMahan showed he had a strong machine underneath him as he began working his way forward and inside the Top-10.
A couple of restarts during the race would bunch things up, and McMahan would take full advantage, as he would continue to work his way forward. As rubber began going down on the speedway, McMahan would get by Daryn Pittman and Jason Sides to get into the sixth spot, where he would go on to finish.
McMahan and company were also in action on other occasions during their final week in the Golden State.
Wednesday night in Placerville, CA, the Elk Grove, CA native would get into early trouble on the start and end up finishing in the 19th position.
Friday night, the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series invaded Keller Auto Speedway in Hanford, CA and McMahan would have a roller coaster type night. Lining up in the 10th spot, McMahan would be really good early in the night as he would get up as high as the fifth spot, but his tire of choice would end up costing him as he drifted back and finished 15th.
“This last week I was really happy with our racecar,” McMahan noted. “Wednesaday night we had mayhem on the start and were stuck in the back all night, and on Saturday I talked to boys into using a different tire compound and I looked like the hero early until it burned off and we fell back.”
