PETERSEN MEDIA: Justyn Cox had a good night going Friday night in Tulare, CA. Taking part in the Peter Murphy Classic with the Sprint Car Challenge Tour, Cox would find himself running in the Top-Five until a part failure on the fifth circuit ended his night.

“Unfortunately on a restart something went south in our engine and it shut off,” Cox said. “I kept it straight but unfortunately we were coming to green and some cars got torn up because of it, and I hate that for my competitors.”

Timing the Berco Redwood/Berry Lumber/Trex backed No. 31c in third quickest in his qualifying group, the Clarksburg, CA pilot would grid the field from the front row of his heat race.

Taking the green flag alongside Matt Peterson, Cox would nail his start and jump out to the early lead. Running the high, scary side around Thunderbowl Raceway, Cox would pick up the win which was important as it not only locked him into the 30-lap feature event but it also gave him a spot in the 10-car Dash.

Finishing third in the Dash, Cox would take the green flag for the feature event from the second row right behind Gio Scelzi. With rubber imminent, deciding how far to go on set up would be tough for the front-runners, and Cox would admit they did not go far enough and were a little loose.

Letting a couple of drivers sneak by in the opening laps that were slowed by yellows, a lap five restart would be pivotal in the Cox’s night. Lining up in fifth, Cox’s machine would lose power as he got on the gas coming to the green, and it would unfortunately stack some cars up behind him.

Under the open red, Cox’s team would try and assess the problem to see if it was something they could fix but it would prove to be terminal and Cox’s night would come to an end.

“We have had some bad luck this season, but fortunately this doesn’t seem like a huge problem,” Cox said. “We have been going good as of late and it is good to have some speed as we head north to take part in the Marvin Smith Memorial this weekend.”

The Cox Racing team would like to thank Berco Redwood, Berry Lumber, Trex, PM Truck Repair, Justice Brothers, K&N, LRB, Konnected, A.R.T., Sacramento Theatrical Lighting, College Cyclery, Arai, Racing Optics, All American Powder Coating, Coos Bay Speedway, Swimming Pool Perfections, Tim’s Hot Rod Shop, Shell Shock, Moyle Race Engines, and Manzer Motorsports for their support in 2018!

2018 BY THE NUMBERS: Races-10, Wins-1, Top 5’s-1, Top 10’s-2
