Mechanical Failure Knocks DJ Netto out of Trophy Cup Finale
PETERSEN MEDIA: Going into Saturday night’s Trophy Cup feature event sitting 10th in points, DJ Netto would see a strong week of racing come to an early end as mechanical issue forced him to retire from the 50-lap affair on the 22nd lap.
“It was a bummer,” DJ Netto said. “We had a good week of racing going with the 3C and the 88n, and unfortunately it didn’t end like we had hoped for either car. I have to thank everyone that made it possible for us to bring out a second car with Tanner Thorson, it was a lot of work to put two fast racecars on the track.”
Trophy Cup kicked off on Thursday night with 90 cars checking into the pit area. Timing in 16th quickest in time trials, Netto would pick up a fourth place finish in his heat race which would place him in the ‘B’ main where he would line up in the ninth starting position.
Turning in an extremely impressive run in the semi, the Hanford, CA native had the Tri-C Manufacturing/Netto Ag/Penny Newman Grain entry ripping around the Thunderbowl Raceway as he raced up to a third place finish and punched his ticket into the feature event.
Lining up 24th for the feature, Netto would continue to flex his muscle as he looked extremely strong on the high banked 1/3rd mile oval. Going high and low, Netto was good anywhere he needed to be as he earned valuable points and made a great run to come home with a 10th place finish.
Looking to get off to a better start on Friday night, Netto opened the night up by timing in sixth quickest in qualifying time trials. Finishing fourth in his heat race again, Netto would earn the automatic transfer into the feature event whre he would line up in the third starting position.
On an extremely heavy and rough racing surface, Netto would Stay in the top five the duration of the race as he raced along side the likes of Steven Tiner, and Jason Meyers.
Keeping his machine with the rubber side down, Netto would end with a great point night as he finished the race off with a fourth place finish.
When it was all tallied up, Netto would go into Saturday night heat races in a very good point position as he sat ninth in the Trophy Cup points.
Finishing sixth in his heat race on an extremely fast racing surface, Netto would fall one spot as he went into the 50-lap Trophy Cup A Main event 10th in points, but still well in contention to compete for the overall title. Working around the fast racing surface that made passing tough in the early goings, Netto’s night would come to an early end as mechanical gremlins forced him into the infield ending his 2017 Trophy Cup.
“From the B Main on Thursday on, we were extremely good,” Netto added. “It was a fun week of racing, and I was happy we were in the mix. It would have been nice to stay in it to the end and see where we would have ended up but it wasn’t in the cards. Again, huge thanks to Clyde and Marion Lamar for their continued support.”
