Monster Weekend Sees Jace Vander Weerd Score First Win Of Season

PETERSEN MEDIA- Jace Vander Weerd had one of those weekends where you feel you can do no wrong. After picking up a second place finish on Friday night in his winged 360 in Hanford, CA, Vander Weerd went on to lead all 30-laps during the Bud Stanfield Memorial in Santa Maria, CA with the USAC West Coast 360 series.
“We were really good both nights,” Vander Weerd explained. “Friday night we were able to pass a couple cars, but I had nothing for Kyle Hirst, and Saturday night it was tough to stay up front in traffic, but our car was really good and I could move when I needed to. Overall a fun weekend.”
Kicking things off on Friday night at the Keller Auto Speedway in Hanford, CA, Vander Weerd would time his entry in eighth fastest before winning his heat race and becoming Dash eligible.
Lining up in the third row of the Dash, the Visalia, CA driver would pick up a sixth place finish aboard his Vander Weerd Construction/Stonegate Development/Battery Worx entry, which would place him in the third row of the 30-lap feature event.
With the track tacky after track work prior to the main, passing would be tough in the opening stages, but Vander Weerd would pick up a few spots. Taking advantage of a couple of restarts, Vander Weerd would work his way into the second spot where he would then chase after Kyle Hirst.
Hirst would set a blistering pace, and Vander Weerd would simply have nothing for him, as he would settle with a second place finish.
Changing pace and shedding the wings for Saturday night action, Vander Weerd would get off to a great start as he would time in second fastest before working from fourth to finish second in his heat race.
With the draw working out in his favor, Vander Weerd would line up on the front row for the 30-lap Bud Stanfield Memorial.
Getting out to the lead at the onset of the race, Vander Weerd would have his hands full with series point leader, Brody Roa, but was able to fend off Roa’s advances. Hitting his marks lap after lap, Vander Weerd would find lapped traffic a little difficult to navigate through, though was still able to stay out front.
A bobble in traffic would two-laps to go nearly saw Vander Weerd cough up the top spot, but he would remain composed and race his way to his first win of the 2016 season.
“I am just really glad to win a race for this team,” Vander Weerd said. “We have led quite a few races and ended up second, so it is nice to put a full night together. I am looking forward to the USAC West Coast season finale weekend this Friday and Saturday night and hoping to have another good weekend.”
Jace and his Vander Weerd Racing team would like to thank Vander Weerd Construction, Stonegate Development, Battery Worx, Mid-Valley Pipe, Basic Industries, Factory Kahne Shocks, Steve Watt Enterprises, FK Rod Ends, PXP Racewear and K&N for their support in 2016.
