Myers Jr Slowed at Merced Speedway

PETERSEN MEDIA: Traveling to Merced Speedway on Saturday night for Sprint Car Challenge Tour action, Joel Myers Jr would have a challenging night as he ultimately found himself in the ‘B’ Main and was unable to make the transfer into the feature.

“Early in the night, track conditions were tricky and even though it was relatively the same for everyone, we just couldn’t get ahead of it and lock ourselves into the feature,” Joel Myers Jr said.

With 52 cars checked in for the series’ second event of the 2022 season, Myers Jr would time the Starr Property Management/Morrison Concrete/Hi-Plains Building Division backed No. 83V mount in seventh fastest in his respective group.

Lining up seventh in his heat race, rubber became an issue early in this night, and by the time the third heat took the track racing conditions were extremely narrow.

Picking up one position in his heat would be vital as the sixth place finish locked the 16-year-old wheelman into the semi rather than forcing him into one of the night’s twin ‘C’ Main events.

Following track prep before the twin ‘C’ Main’s, the B Main surface was extremely racy and allowed for some drivers to work different lines of the high-banked ¼ mile bullring.

Taking the green flag from the ninth starting position, Myers Jr would be one of the bigger movers in the 15-lap event. Working his way forward, Myers Jr would race into sixth, but the top-four had gotten away from him.

Doing what he could to track them down as they got into traffic, Myers Jr would be unable to obtain a transfer position and his night would come to an end earlier than hoped.

“In the “B” main I felt good, and that was a positive from the night,” Myers Jr said. “It was tricky in qualifying with rubber starting to go down, and then in our heat we just got in line and went. Thanks to Dave Vertullo, Brian Cannon, and all of the guys that help our team out.”

BY THE NUMBERS: Starts- 15, Wins-0, Top-5’s- 5, Top-10’s-6

ON TAP: Myers Jr and Vertullo Motorsports are set for two nights of 410ci action Friday and Saturday night in Chico, CA.
