Netto 12th at Johnny Key Classic

PETERSEN MEDIA: After falling victim to the vicious cushion that the Ocean Speedway offered on Saturday night, DJ Netto gave up some track position, but was still able to pick up a 12th place finish.

“I just made a mistake and got into the cushion the wrong way, and got over it and lost a bunch of track position right before the break,” Netto said. “Then the rubber started to come and things slowed down.”

With 43 cars on hand vying for 17 spots in the Johnny Key Classic Presented By Al’s Roofing Supply feature event, Netto took went out in the first group for time trials, and timed his Netto Ag/Penny Newman Grain/Bogies Auto Parts mount in second quick, putting him on the pole of his 12-lap qualifier.

Leading the field to green alongside Kyle Hirst, Netto was able to get the jump, as he hit his marks on the slick surface, and went on to pick up the win, putting him safely in the 50-lap feature, where he would line up in the seventh position.

As the race got underway, Netto hooked up in an entertaining battle with Sean Becker and Mitchell Faccinto as the raced wheels to wheel, in what was an exiting opening segment.

The laps clicked down towards the scheduled lap 25 stop, and on the 22nd lap, Netto got into the cushion too hard, and bicycled his machine.

By the time he got his car settled down, Netto fell in line in the 12th spot, where he would sit at the halfway point.

With the rubber coming in in the waning laps of the first segment, the second segment saw a 25 lap single file effort, as drivers fought for real estate right on the bottom of the speedway.

Speniding much of the closing laps behind Carson Macedo, Netto would cross the stripe with a 12th place finish.

“We had a better car than a 12th place finish, I just messed up at one of the worst times possible with the way the track went,” he added. “My guys worked hard all night, and deserved to have a better finish, but I take my hat off to them.”

DJ and his Netto Racing team would like to thank Netto Agriculture, Penny Newman Grain, Bogies Auto Parts, and Vande Pol Enterprises for their support in 2014.

ON TAP: Netto will head north to meet up with the World of Outlaws in Lebanon, OR on Tuesday Sept. 2nd, Medford, OR on the 3rd, before returning to CA for the Gold Cup in Chico, CA on the 5th and 6th.
