PETERSEN MEDIA: Saturday night at the Silver Dollar Speedway, DJ Netto impressed on lookers as he ran on the ragged edge at the Silver Dollar Speedway going toe to toe with the World of Outlaws until late race heartbreak knocked him out of contention of his first ever World of Outlaws feature event.
“We were awesome on Saturday night,” DJ Netto said. “Last September we ran really well with the World of Outlaws during the Gold Cup, so I was looking forward to this weekend. I was able to find something up top and get to the front, but unfortunately caution laps were my enemy, and we came up short on fuel.”
Just as he did during the Gold Cup Race of Champions, Netto was quick again at the Silver Dollar Speedway against “The Greatest Show on Dirt”. Timing his Netto Ag/Penny Newman Grain/Kaeding Performance backed No. 88n machine in fourth fastest in time trials, the Hanford, CA product would pick up the win during his heat race.
Moving into the night’s Dash, Netto would finish fourth, which put him in the second row of the 40-lap Mini Gold Cup feature event. As the race went green, Netto quickly went to the top side of the speedway and raced his way into second as he tracked down the early leader, Tyler Walker.
On the fourth lap, Netto brought the crowd to their feet as he drove around Walker and took command of the race. A technical track caused a handful of cations on this night, but Netto was up to the challenge as he would drive away from some of the best in the business restart after restart.
As the race drew to a close, Netto looked to be on his way to his first ever World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series feature event win, but a caution on lap 34 would slow things down.
Coming back to take the green, Netto’s machine would stumble and it was apparent that he was out of fuel. As he stumbled, Netto would dejectedly take his machine back to the pit area.
“It was one of the lowest feelings I think I have ever had,” Netto said. “It is tough to win a World of Outlaws race, and to come that close just stings. I have to thank Skip, Wood, and Brian for giving me a great car. They deserved to win that race.”
Friday night, Netto and company were on hand at the Ocean Speedway for the World of Outlaws first night of action in Watsonville, CA since 2007.
Timing in 11th fastest in rare group qualifying for the series, Netto would finish fourth in his heat race aboard the Shell Rotella T6/Van De Pol Enterprises No. 88n.
Lining up 11th in the feature event, Netto would hang around the Top-10 as many drivers fought for position using the low side of the speedway on a very narrow and fast racing surface.
Looking to make something happen, the youngster would go searching on the high side of the speedway looking to make headway. Giving it a valiant effort, Netto would slip back to finish 15th.
“Friday night I just got tired of following everyone,” Netto said. “I figured the only way to get anywhere was to try something, and I did that and it didn’t work out. Overall I thought it was a good weekend for our team, and hopefully we continue to get stronger.”
DJ and his Netto Racing team would like to thank Netto Agriculture, Penny Newman Grain, Kaeding Performance, Shell Rotella T6, and Van De Pol Enterprises for their support in 2016.
ON TAP: DJ and his Netto Racing team will be back in action on Saturday and Sunday night at the Calistoga Speedway.
2016 BY THE NUMBERS: Starts-15, Wins-0, Top 5’s-1, Top 10’s-2
