PETERSEN MEDIA: Resuming his 2014 campaign with the King of the West Series over the weekend, DJ Netto turned in a pair of strong performances as he finished fourth at the Santa Maria Speedway on Friday night, before tallying a sixth place finish at the Ventura Raceway on Saturday night.
“Overall it was a really good weekend for our team,” Netto said. “We put ourselves in contention on both nights, but we just had a couple of things not go our way, but pleased with our performance.”
Kicking his weekend off at the Santa Maria Speedway on Friday night, Netto timed his Netto Ag/Penny Newman Grain/Bogies Auto Parts entry in second fastest during qualifying time trials.
In heat race action, the Hanford, CA driver got off to a great start as he jumped into the third spot, but as the race moved along, Netto’s engine began to get hot, and be backed off a bit, and settled for a fourth place finish, earning himself a berth in the dash.
Lining up for the dash, Netto lost a head gasket, and was forced back into the pit area, where his team began to swap out engines. Getting the engine swapped out promptly, Netto was able to make the call for the feature event, where he lined up in the fourth row, as he was credited with an eighth place finish in the dash.
On a very tight and rough racing surface, Netto was able to keep his nose clean, and his car under him, as he raced in the lead pack. With wheelies the norm on this night, Netto was able to gain spots, as he took advantage of other drivers miscues, as he raced his way inside the Top-Five.
When the checkered flag flew on the event, Netto crossed under it with a fourth place finish.
“It was a tricky track, but my guys gave me a car that worked well on it, and I was able to take advantage of some other driver mistakes, and end up with a fourth place finish,” he explained.
Continuing to head south, Netto followed the series to the Ventura Raceway in Ventura, CA as winged sprint cars made their first ever start at the facility.
With 19 cars on hand, Netto would timed his machine in 11th quickest, before finishing second in his heat race to Kyle Hirst.
Lining up 11th in the feature event, Netto adapted well to the tight confines in Ventura, CA as he quickly worked his way forward. Working into the third spot just before the halfway point, Netto would make a bid for the second spot on the 16th lap, just as the red came out, and his pass was negated.
Under the stoppage, Netto’s left rear tire began to lose air pressure, but the Rookie of the Year contender opted to stay on the speedway and try to nurse it home.
With his car a bit of a handful with the flat tire, Netto would do a great job of manhandling his machine, as he was able to salvage a sixth place finish.
“It was a fun weekend overall,” Netto said. “It was pretty cool to get to some tracks that we really don’t race at, and do well. I can’t thank my family, and my team for all of their help and support.”
DJ and his Netto Racing team would like to thank Netto Agriculture, Penny Newman Grain, Bogies Auto Parts, and Vande Pol Enterprises for their support in 2014.
ON TAP: Netto and his team will make a decision this week about where they will be in action at next.
