PETERSEN MEDIA: Having a great outing at the 23rd Annual Trophy Cup in Tulare, CA, DJ Netto would find himself with a hard fought second place finish during Saturday night’s 50-lap feature event which would place him third in the final Trophy Cup standings.
“We have been so good the last couple of months, and I came into this weekend with a ton of confidence,” DJ Netto said. “We were really good all three nights and it is nice to come away with a second place finish in the race, but more importantly a third place finish in the final points.”
Over the three days of action, Netto’s weekend could simply be summed up in one word; eventful.
Timing the Tri-C Manufacturing/Netto Ag/Penny Newman Grain backed No. 3C in 12th fastest on Thursday night, the Hanford, CA pilot would pick up a heat race win and find himself on the front row of the 30-lap feature event.
Getting off to the early lead in the feature event, Netto would set a nice pace over Shane Golobic. A restart on lap seven would see Golobic get by Netto to take over the lead, as Netto would slide back to the second spot.
On the 11th lap things would get ugly for Netto as contact would sent his car hard into the turn four wall and he would get upside down, and his night would come to an end.
Bouncing back for Friday night’s event, Netto would come out with a chip on his shoulder as he timed in fourth fastest in his qualifying flight. Running seventh in his heat race,
With track prep before the feature event making the track just too good in the feature event, Netto would fight a tight racecar as much of the field used the bottom of the speedway.
Not able to do much, Netto would gain valuable points toward Saturday night after a disastrous Thursday as his 12th place finish sat him 13th in event points heading into the finale.
Running third in his Saturday night heat race, Netto would gain a couple of spots in points as he would sit 11th, which would line him up 10th in the 50-lap feature event.
On a track that was extremely racy in the early goings of the feature event, Netto would make some headway as he worked his way through the Top-10. Using a lap seven restart to his advantage, Netto would break into the Top-Five before working on Steven Tiner and Henry Van Dam to get up into the second spot.
Once in second, race leader Willie Croft had opened up a huge lead so Netto focused on making strong laps as the scheduled break was looming.
Sitting in the second spot when the yellow flew on the 35th lap, Netto would have a handful of lapped cars between himself and Croft, which would allow Croft to get away as he had to clear cars.
With Croft untouchable out front, Netto would cap off his charge from 10th to finish in the second spot and put him third in overall Trophy Cup points.
“It is a tough weekend of racing with a tough field of cars, so we are proud to finish third in points, and charge from 10th to finish second in the race,” Netto added. “We had a great racecar all weekend long, and we will keep after it to try and get Clyde and Marion Lamar back into victory lane during these last two weekends of action.”
