Opening Night Non-Wing Win Highlights Ashton Torgerson’s Cal Cup

PETERSEN MEDIA- Traveling to Lemoore, CA last weekend to take part in the Cal Cup, Ashton Torgerson would have a strong weekend in Non-Winged action while he battled some tough luck in the Winged Super 600 class.

Kicking the three-day extravaganza off on Thursday night, Torgerson opened his Cal Cup up by timing his Rowdy Energy backed No. 02 Non-Winged entry in fifth fastest in qualifying time trials.

Moving into heat race action, Torgerson pocketed a fourth-place finish that ultimately lined him up on the front row of the 25-lap opening night feature event.

From his front row starting position, Torgerson was quick to jump on the throttle and grab the early lead. Out in front, Torgerson would not be denied on this night. Leading flag to flag, Torgerson raced on to his 33rd win of the 2022 season.

Friday night Super 600-Winged action saw Torgerson time in fourth fastest in time trials before racing to a third-place finish in his heat. Lining up seventh in the 25-lap feature event, early issues would drop Torgerson to the rear of the field.

From the back, the Medford, OR driver worked his way forward in the fast-paced feature as he closed the opening night out with a 13th place finish.

Right back in action on Friday night, Ashton Torgerson continued to time in well as Non-Winged action saw him qualify seventh quickest overall before he powered his way to a win in heat race competition.

Moving into the ‘A’, Torgerson lined the Rowdy Energy backed entry up in the fifth row and would showcase another strong race car underneath him on this night. Though he fell back to 11th in the opening stages of the race, Torgerson would quickly jump into 10th where he ran the first 12 laps.

The second half of the race saw Torgerson start to make some headway as he sliced and diced his way through the Top-10 and into the Top-Five. When the checkered flew over the Non-Winged race, Torgerson backed up his opening night win with a fourth place finish.

Timing his Rowdy Energy No. 02 Super 600-Winged car in 12th fastest, Torgerson’s fifth place finish in his heat forced him into the night’s ‘B’. Charging from fourth to second in the semi, Torgerson would transfer into the ‘A’, but early issues would bring his night to an end after two laps.

Saturday night brought on the Cal Cup Championship and Torgerson’s body of worked locked him into the Non-Winged feature 40-lap feature event where he took the green flag from the seventh starting position.

Having a good start to the feature, Torgerson jumped into the Top-Five where he ran in the fourth spot during the early portion of the 40-lap affair.

Briefly slipping back to sixth while taking part in a tight knit battle, Torgerson jumped into fifth on the race’s 12th lap. Continuing to run in fifth for a majority of the feature, more action in the race’s closing laps saw Torgerson slip back to a seventh-place finish to cap his Non-Winged Cal Cup.

Kicking his night off in the ‘B’ in Super 600 Winged action, Torgerson would get the jump from his front row starting position and power his way to the win and punch his ticket into the final 40-lap feature event of the night.

Taking the green flag from the 17th starting position, Torgerson got off to a quick start as he quickly began working his way forward and through the field. Getting into 11th on the race’s sixth lap, Torgerson continued to right towards a spot in the Top-10.

Making his way into 10th on the race’s 17th lap, Torgerson would continue to race hard until the 20th lap when issues would bring his Super-600 feature event to a premature end.

ON TAP: Ashton Torgerson will shift gears this weekend as he will turn his attention back to his Rowdy Energy backed No. 02 Winged 360ci Sprint Car and take part in the Trophy Cup this Thursday – Saturday in Tulare, CA.
