PETERSEN MEDIA: A very successful trip to Calistoga Speedway saw Austin Liggett pick up a second and fifth place finish during the Louie Vermeil Classic as he left the event with the California Sprint Week points lead.
“I am a little frustrated with how Saturday night ended with the curfew and everything as it was setting up for a really good battle for the win, but we came back just as strong on Sunday and finished fifth so overall I am pleased with how we ran and it is cool to leave the Sprint Week points lead, however work will keep us from running all races,” Austin Liggett said.
Saturday night at Calistoga Speedway, Liggett got the night kicked off by timing the Excel Environmental Services/Liggett Trucking/Tool Technology entry in 10th quickest in time trials. Picking up a fourth place finish in his heat race, Liggett would find himself on the front row of the feature event.
Getting the jump, Liggett would set a nice pace on the the slick surface as he led early. Continuing to look strong out front, Austin Williams would soon close in on him as the action picked up.
Slipping back to second as Williams got by him, Liggett would bide his time as he closed back in on the race leader in the waning laps. Getting stronger in the closing laps, Liggett closed in on Williams’ bumper on the 22nd lap on to see the caution flag fly. Under the yellow, the clock struck 11pm, and the checkered was then dropped as Liggett ended up with a second place finish.
Frustrated with how things ended, Liggett came out strong on Sunday as he laid down a great lap in time trials and ended up with quick time honors.
An exciting finish in heat race action saw Liggett finish fourth at the line which was important, as it kept him in the feature event inversion. Lining up sixth on the starting grid, a great start would see Liggett jump up to third as he looked for top honors at the Louie. On a hooked up surface, Liggett would battle hard, though he would lose a couple of spots in the race’s closing laps.
When the checkered flag flew on the wild weekend, Liggett closed the weekend out with a fifth place finish and sat atop the CA Sprint Week points lead.
“I can’t thank my parents, Britton, Matt, and Haleigh enough for all of the hard work and support in Calistoga, CA,” Austin Liggett said. “Unfortunately work takes precedent over racing so we won’t be back in action again until (hopefully) Friday at Merced Speedway.”
Austin Liggett Racing would like to thank Excel Environmental Services, Liggett Trucking, Tool Technology, Hurst Fabrications, Maxwell Industries, Shine Photography, and Morris Motorsports for their support.
2019 BY THE NUMBERS: Races-25, Wins-7, Top 5’s-16, Top 10’s-20
ON TAP: Liggett is hoping to make the Sprint Week event at Merced Speedway on Friday night.
