PETERSEN MEDIA: Though his night did not start all that great, DJ Netto and his DNR team continued to push forward and in the end, Netto would walk away from the 56th Annual Johnny Key Classic with a sixth place finish.

“It was a rough start for us, and I was pretty down on myself early in the night,” DJ Netto said. “Fortunately, I have a great team surrounding me and we all worked at it and turned the night around and had a pretty good run.”

A total of 38 cars checked into the Ocean Speedway for the 56th running of the Johnny Key Classic, and of the 34 that needed to time in, Netto would time the Netto Ag/Penny Newman Grain/Kaeding Performance No. 88n machine in 18th fastest.

With heat races being lined up straight off of times, Netto would find himself third row of his heat needing to finish in the Top-Three to transfer. Coming up just short, Netto’s fourth place finish would place him in the second row of a B Main event, where he would need to finish in the Top-Two to punch his ticket.

Getting off to a very nice start, Netto would get into the second spot where he chased after Toby Bellbowen. Making a late move, Netto would win the semi and advance into the 50-lap feature event where he gridded the field from the 18th starting position.

A racy Ocean Speedway surface greeted the field of 23 for the grueling feature event, and Netto would patiently work his way forward from the back of the pack. Working towards the Top-10, Netto would find himself just on the outside of it when the red flag flew on the 25th lap.

With his crew able to get his car a little better for the final 25-laps, Netto would get off to a good start as he battled for position, and got up into to Top-10, and then gained two more spots as cars wrecked on the 30th lap.

The lap 30 restart would see the Hanford, CA pilot continue to work forward as he would get into the sixth spot and battle for position in the top five.

Getting into fifth in the closing laps of the race, Netto and Mitchell Faccinto would hook up in an entertaining battle following the race’s final restart on the 40th lap. Swapping the spot numerous times during the final 10-laps, Netto would take the checkered flag with a sixth place finish.

“It was a wild finish, but I was glad to avoid a couple of disasters, and move forward,” Netto added. “We took full advantage of the stop, and were bale to make a good run in the final laps.”

DJ and his Netto Racing team would like to thank Netto Agriculture, Penny Newman Grain, Kaeding Performance, Shell Rotella T6, and Van De Pol Enterprises for their support in 2016.

ON TAP: Netto returns to action with the King of the West Series on Saturday night in Petaluma, CA.
