PETERSEN MEDIA: Austin Liggett has been on a terror thus far in 2019, and Friday night that remained true as the Tracy, CA driver claimed one of the biggest wins of his career as he took top honors at the Peter Murphy Classic.

“This was a really special race to win, and one I have set out to win since Peter Murphy started putting this deal on,” Austin Liggett said. “It is just incredible what he has done for the sport with this race in particular. We have supported it since the start and it is one that I have wanted very badly, so this is just awesome.”

With 22 cars checked into Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, CA on Friday night, Liggett would get his night rolling by timing the Excel Environmental Services/Liggett Trucking/Tool Technology backed No. 83 machine in second quickest.

Taking the green flag from the sixth starting position in his heat race, Liggett would grab the lead by the third lap and simply leave the field in his wake. With a massive lead, Liggett would nearly ruin his night on the last lap as he would clip a tractor tire and damage his racecar as he would do donuts all the way across the finish line.

Fortunately his sizeable lead allowed him to still finish in a transfer position as he would spin across the line in fourth.

Moving into the Peter Murphy Classic feature event, Liggett would grid the field from the fifth starting position as he looked for his second consecutive USAC West Coast 360 feature event win.

From his third row starting spot, Liggett and fellow third row starter, Richard Vander Weerd, would battle hard with each other as they worked their way to the front two spots.

With Vander Weerd out front, Liggett would stalk him using the bottom of the speedway as he was able to sneak by on the 14th lap. With the second half of the race mired by stoppages, Liggett would continue to nail his restarts and stick his line as he kept the likes of Ryan Bernal and Jace Vander Weerd at bay.

Having another near miss with that same tractor time late in the feature event, all would be fine for Liggett as he withstood a last lap surge from Ryan Bernal to claim top honors at the Peter Murphy Classic.

“I can’t thank my crew enough for all of their hard work,” Liggett said. “My dad has this care really good right now, and it makes my job easy. My mom and Matt always work so hard for me and it means the world to me. I also have to thank everyone that came over after my heat race antics and helped us get the car back together for the feature.”

Austin Liggett Racing would like to thank Excel Environmental Services, Liggett Trucking, Tool Technology, Hurst Fabrications, Maxwell Industries, Shine Photography, and Morris Motorsports for their support.

2019 BY THE NUMBERS: Races-13, Wins-6, Top 5’s-10, Top 10’s-11
