Peterson Shows Speed At Johnny Key Classic

PETERSEN MEDIA- Matt Peterson had a very strong night going with the Civil War Series Presented By Flowmaster during the 54th Annual Johnny Key Classic presented by Al’s Roofing Supply, but a lap 47 yellow saw his right-rear tire go flat forcing him to give up his fourth place position with just three laps to go.

“It was a terrible feeling,” Peterson said. “Everyone worked so hard to put us in that position, and we came up short of our goal by just three laps. I can’t thank my family and everyone who helps, because we are continuing to get better.”

With 43 cars on hand to take time, and look to race their way into the Johnny Key Classic at the Ocean Speedway, Peterson took advantage of his pill draw, and set the standard, earning his first career quick time award, and pocketing a nice bonus that was up for grabs for the event.

Lining up for his 12-lap qualifier on the pole, Peterson quickly jumped out to the stop spot on the slick surface, and raced away from the field, as he picked up the win, putting himself in the third row for the 50-lap main event.

When the green flag dropped on the event, Peterson made a bold move in the first corner as he got by Greg DeCaires and Mason Moore to jump into the third spot, as he chased after the lead duo of Bud Kaeding and Shane Golobic.

With Tommy Tarlton chasing after him, Peterson held strong, as he began fending off pressure for his spot.

Matching Tarlton’s move with a cross over, Peterson was able to maintain the third spot, before he would fall to fourth on the 18th lap, as Rico Abreu was able to sneak by him.

Sitting in the fourth spot on the 25th lap, the race was red flagged for a scheduled stop, allowing Peterson and his Miller Lite team to go over some things.

Restarting in the fourth spot aboard his V&H Fresh/Miller Lite/Inventory Sales backed no. p37 machine, Peterson was quick to drop into the rubber, as the entire field was now hugging the bottom of the speedway.

With the last segment nearly going caution free, disaster struck on the 47th lap, when the caution flag flew.

Idling around the speedway, Peterson’s right-rear tire rapidly began losing air, and through he tried to keep heat in it to build pressure back up, he was forced to pull off the speedway and make changes.

Starting from the tail end of the lead lap, Peterson would end his night with a 14th place finish.

“Nights like these are rough, but you have to look at the positives about them,” he added. “We had speed. We set fast time. We won our qualifier. We went toe-to-toe with some of the best for 47 laps. We are getting there, but at the same time you want to be able to finish those nights where you are in a good spot.”

Matt and his team would like to thank V&H Fresh, Miller Lite, Inventory Sales Company, Bear Trucking, Future Energy Savers, Transportation Services, The Oil Medics, Shell Shock, and MTFX Graphics for their support in 2014.

ON TAP: Peterson and his team are planning on being in action this coming Saturday night at the Placerville Speedway.
